You might know me as the “Carrboro High arts wing candidate,” which is how I became so heavily involved in our school community and then committed to run for the school board.  I want to bring the same level of effectiveness, energy and service to advocate for students and their families across our entire school district.

People I have spoken with during this campaign are generally pleased with public education here, but there are pockets of frustration and disappointment that systematically cut across all schools. Making improvements to the education of our students will require strong members on the board who are willing to speak out and make necessary changes. You can count on me to be one of those voices.  I commit myself to serving the best interests of all students so that each one can reach his or her academic potential.

In addition to pushing the Arts Wing to the top of the capital project list and effectively lobbying the County Commission for funding, I have done the following:
  • Discovered errors in the administration’s budget that would have negatively affected all three high schools.
  • Pushed for policy changes so that students at Carrboro High could access to the same opportunities as students at Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill High Schools.
  • Worked with the current board members, the district administration, and County Commissioners, thereby learning how the district operates (for good and for bad).

The School Board election has three open seats, so you may vote for one, two, or three candidates.  I ask you to cast one of your votes for me.

Early voting for local elections is Oct. 15-31 at the Morehead Planetarium and Carrboro Town Hall; Election Day is Nov. 3 at your regular precinct voting location.

Best regards,

Susana

p.s. Please share this information with others who care about the future of Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools.  I can make a difference with your help.

All,

There is a seat vacant on the school board following Joe Green's
recent resignation. The school board will be discussing the process
for selecting an individual to fill the vacancy next Thursday and is
considering a different process than has been used in the past.
Specifically, there is consideration of appointing a
previously-elected board member. The rationale for considering doing
so is that the board will be selecting a new superintendent in the
next 6 months and there is need to have all seven members fully
trained and experienced for that selection. There is additional
information available on the district website in the packet for the
October 7, 2010 school board meeting (starting on page 86).
