Parents and Performing Arts Supporters,
Thanks to your actions, things are inching forward with the Carrboro High School Arts Wing. But your help is needed now more than ever: The Orange County Board of Commissioners will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. about whether to formally authorize the bonds to build the wing.
It is possible that the County Commissioners will choose to put off building the CHS Arts Wing because of concerns about temporarily exceeding their self-imposed debt capacity. If construction is postponed, the Arts Wing could fall behind Elem School #11 and other large projects in priority — and years will pass before CHS students have a stage and appropriate performing arts classrooms. The hearing will be held at the Central Orange Senior Center (behind SportsPlex building), 103 Meadowlands Dr., Hillsborough, NC.
Please show up for this public hearing. Remind the commissioners that:
The Arts Wing is part of the core school facility, not an add-on. Carrboro High School does not meet the minimum new school construction standards — and these standards were set by the commissioners themselves. It also doesn’t meet the less-stringent state standards.
The education of these students is compromised by the lack of adequate and appropriate space.
Carrboro High School is the only high school in Orange County that does not have an auditorium
Building the Arts Wing now will cost less than if they put it off for later — because no-interest or low-interest bonds are available now!
It is extremely important to keep the pressure on the Orange County Commissioners about this issue. Please attend the public hearing. Wear purple. Plan to speak.
Thank you again for all you have done so far. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
