Hi folks - here is an outline of the material I shared a week ago
concenring our paper's materials and methods sections, results
sections, and conclusion/discussion sections. fyi only. Perhaps the
reminder will help. I also added a few more detials.

Here is the outline that I reviewed with the 9th graders; and what I
am saying to the seniors who will listen long enough.

Materials and Methods suggested paragraphs section

P1
Question
Hypothesis (CEI) or problem statement (DPI)
MV and RV (CEI) or solution target (DPI)
Thesis (ie – meta-procedure) – contains outline of what is to follow –
this is what you evaluate in your discussion section (see below)

P2
Materials and manufacturers

+++++++++++++++++++++
CEI continuation:

P3
Statistic to be used to decide if hypothesis is supported or not
Controlled variables

P4
Operational definition of MV and RV
Summary of procedure used

+++++++++++++++++++++
DPI continuation:

P3
Statistic to be used to decide if problem is solved or not
Constraints

P4, P5, P6, etc as needed
Statement of reasons for testing the variable that you are testing,
result of that test on RV
Relevant qualitative observations
(repeat as necessary, to cover the major tests you completed to solve
the problem)

Results section

+++++++++++
CEI continuation
P1
Summary of data, numbers from table, appearance of graph, statistics
P2
Qualitative observations
++++++++++++
DPI continuation
P1
Summary of best result from all of the tests and variables tested,
include data. Some projects will naturally have graphs, others wont.
Statistics.

Conclusion section

+++++++++++++
P1
CEI = was hypothesis supported or not? Summary of results section that
supports this statement
DPI = description of final best solution, include values of variables
if appropriate

P2
relate your findings to other’s findings that you reported in your lit
review

P3
Evaluate your methodology (statement given in P1 of MM section –
“thesis”)

P4
Outline plan for future experiments (CEI) or development of solutions
to the problem (DPI)

P5
General summary conclusion of your entire project

P6
Tell us a story about how the world would be a better place if your
experiment or problem solution were implemented everywhere. Include
both short term and long term benefits.
