Theairline's system update, set to commence at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, will temporarily render the Allegiant website and mobile app unavailable.

During this period, passengers will be unable to perform online check-ins or access electronic boarding passes.

Passengers on Wednesday will have to check in at LVIA's ticket counter, located on the second level of the Main Terminal. On Tuesday night, passengers will either have to check in and print the boarding pass or save the tickets into their digital wallets, according to the airline.

Allegiant says in a news release that its call center will be accessible solely for addressing general inquiries. Call center representatives will not have the capacity to perform passenger check-ins, initiate new reservations or access, alter or cancel existing reservations until the update has concluded.

The no-frills Las Vegas-based airline said customers who download a mobile boarding pass on their mobile device or tablet, or who check in online and print their boarding pass at home, will be able to avoid the new fee.

"We now have mobile scanning technology in even the smallest airports in our network so that every Allegiant customer can `go paperless' and use their smartphone or tablet to check in, pass through security and board their flight," Andrew Levy, Allegiant Travel Co. president and COO said in a statement.

The new charge does not apply to customers ineligible for advance check-in, including those traveling with pets in the cabin, or to passengers with disabilities who are unable to print or download boarding passes.

In an analysis of airline ancillary revenue released in July 2014 by IdeaWorksCompany and CarTrawler, Allegiant was No. 3 (behind Spirit Airlines and Wizz Air) on a list of top 10 airlines rated by percentage of ancillary revenue as percent of total revenue in 2013.

Allegiant is not the only domestic airline to charge passengers for printing boarding passes at the airport. Spirit Airlines also charges $10 (up from $5) to have an airport agent print a boarding pass and charges fees for onboard drinks and snacks, reservation made via the call center and on-line, and carry-on bags too large to fit under the seat in front of you. A list of these and other optional and unavoidable charges on Spirit are listed here.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (WTXL) -- At a point when flyers may have believed there was nothing else to be charged for, Allegiant Air announced they will now begin charging passengers $5 to print a boarding pass at the airport.

USA Today reports the Las Vegas-based airline is encouraging passengers to download a mobile app to download their boarding pass on a smartphone or table, or to check in online and print the pass at home.

This is the latest in a trend of ala carte pricing airlines have been setting up for customers. This includes separate pricing on some airlines for larger seats, exit aisle seats, snacks and drinks plus baggage. Spirit Airlines even charges passengers for carry-on bags.

US ultra low-cost airline Allegiant Air will embark on a natural progression in its product unbundling strategy when it starts charging passengers $5 for boarding passes printed at select airports on September 1.

Allegiant joins ultra low-cost airline Spirit in charging a fee to customers that opt for agents to print out their boarding passes at airports. Spirit introduced a $5 charge in 2012, and upped the fee to $10 in 2013.

Allegiant also followed Spiritʼs lead in charging customers for carry-on bags starting in 2012 after Spirit debuted the controversial fees in 2010. Frontier Airlines, which is transitioning into a full-fledged ultra low-cost carrier, also began charging passengers for carry-on luggage in April of this year.

For Allegiant the main drivers in creating the new charge were cost savings and driving more passengers to its mobile phone application that allows travellers to check-in for flights, add seat assignments, receive their boarding pass on a phone or tablet and upgrade to priority boarding.

That happened to me as well. I called the airline 800# from the terminal, ( the ticket counter line was too long) and they corrected and added over the phone. I went back to the kiosk and reprinted my pass with the TSA PreCheck on it. * full disclosure this was a few years ago, but could be worth a try if the line is too long at the ticket counter.

Great tip! Also, my daughter was recently on a flight and when she checked in onlineand got her boarding pass the day before, it had TSA pre-check on it and she took a screenshot.

However, when she got to the airport the next day, the airline app was showing her boarding pass without TSA pre-check. So she gratefully used her picture of the boarding pass to go through the pre-check line. I will always in the future take a picture of that TSA pre-check boarding pass just in case for some weird reason it gets removed!

Arrived at LAX after a 14+ hour flight. No pre check was showing on my boarding pass. I had been flagged with the dreaded SSSS on my Sydney to LA flight but not in the LAX-MSP flight. 7 AM in a packed LAX domestic terminal on little to no sleep and no PreCheck

Had the check in agent see what the problem was. They had changed my birthdate by a day. But were completely unable to fix the problem and had to go through regular security. It took about 45 minutes more than my husband that went through Precheck. And the TSA agents are complete a holes about the whole situation.

I checked in on my iMac, all looked good, no OPTION for printing my boarding pass. Why? Because cellphones loose battery or get lost or get dropped in water. I've only lost battery power but wife has lost hers and dropped it in water.

Is there an easier way? I have poor eyes and hate to use my cellphone unless necessary (other than phone calls). I am computer literate in case someone is rolling their eyes. Even getting registered into this Forum is pedantic an so 20th century.

Nothing wrong with paper boarding passes. It's been awhile since I printed from a computer, but if I remember correctly the boarding passes were shown on screen and selecting the standard File/Print option worked. Another option is to check-in online, then when you go to the airport use a kiosk in the check in area to print your boarding pass there.

Text will send you a link to a mobile-formatted boarding pass, which is automatically saved to your phone if using an iPhone or Google Pay on Android. You can also view the mobile boarding pass, take a screenshot, or save it to your photos folder by clicking on the camera icon in the upper right hand corner.

If you check in on your mobile device via the Southwest app or mobile website, you're offered a mobile-formatted boarding pass, which can then be saved in all the ways mentioned above.

If you check in on your mobile device via the mobile website but would prefer to print your boarding pass to a local printer, just force the phone to load the desktop site instead of the mobile one, and you'll see the three options I showed earlier, which includes Print.

computer literate or not, people need to get over it when somebody still likes things simpler than having a ton of stupid apps and gadgets. YES, I still have a slide phone, and manage life just well thank you.

It used to be you could go directly to the full site to get a printable boarding pass, but now, trying to go to the full site automatically flips you back to the mobile site, from which you cannot print a boarding pass. Using the method above, you stay on the full site and can print the boarding pass from your phone. I did it from an iPhone, but it probably works from any phone.

Important: This feature is available for all Google Pixel phones, version 3 and up. To add a boarding pass with a screenshot, you must install the Google Wallet app on your phone and have an active internet connection.
