Hi
My last post was sometime last fall.
I appreciated so much for all the reply and message I received. I am so grateful that I found this group!
I am mot alone and I am not the only one fighting for my baby!

My 6 year dobe boy Kona has copper associated liver disease.(diagnosed 1.5 years ago) and he has been on pred, zinc, milk thistle, SAM-E and vitamine E and also started Azathioprine bout 3 month ago.

His ALT went down gradually and reached down to 160  when he first started pred around holiday season in 2014.
At that time he was on Zinc acetate.
And all of sudden zinc acetate was not available due to manufacture's production problem and we had to switch to zinc gluconate.

After about 1.5 months after switching zinc gluconate, his ALT value went up to 466 that was when our Vet started Azathioprine addition to pred.
His ALT keep on going up from 466 to 487 (487 was about 2 months ago).
When I saw the spike, I started him on Chinese herbs and once a week laser accupancture by holistic vet.
He has been on Chinese Herbs for a bout a month now and the recent blood work just came back with ALT 524.

I was so upset and do not know what else I can do.

Our vet (specialist) told me the number increase is not due to the switch to zinc gluconate because it takes months and years for copper to accumulate in system.

However my gut feeling is telling me that not having zinc acetate is the reason.

I will start checking the availability on Galzin (zinc acetate).

If anybody  know about Zinc Acetate VS Zinc Gluconate, please share the info.

Thank you so much!

JJ

Hi JJ,

I don't know anything about the differences between the two types of zinc. However, I can tell you we get our zinc acetate from a compounding pharmacist. It was much cheaper than getting it from a regular pharmacy, and they are able to make whatever dose you need. We use our local compounding pharmacist for the zinc, but I also really like Diamondback Drugs (we use them for other meds for our boy).

Good luck!

The two different zinc formulas have differing amounts of elemental zinc per mg.  400 mg of zinc gluconate does not contain the same amount of zinc as zinc acetate so your vet would need to adjust the dose accordingly. When my Doberman was going through this our vet recommended zinc acetate because it requires way fewer pills to get the proper amount of elemental zinc into her.

Hi liz.

Your info is something new for me.
My dog has been taking the same dosage ( 50 mg every 12 hrs) even after switching to Zinc gluconate.
Maybe since the switch his actual intake may have been decreased a lot!
I have an apo with specialist tomorrow for monthly check up and  I will most definitely ask her this dosage thing.

Thank you so much!

JJ
