Hello William,
thank you for pointing this out!
I know about the Text app, and I am seeing the following problems with it:
- Technically, this app is not part of Chrome OS. Granted, it is free, it is open-source, and it is part of the Chrome OS ecosystem by being available in the web store, but that doesn't make it part of Chrome OS. Google is not responsible for this app, and if the developer chose to retract the app from the web store, Google could not do anything about it.
- In its default mode, this app is totally inaccessible as far as its primary functionality, namely, text editing, is concerned. To make it accessible, one has to figure out to go to settings and activate screen reader mode. Why should there be a non screen reader mode in the first place? The message here is that accessibility is an optional gimmick that needs to be turned on as necessary.
- Screen reader mode in this app simply swaps out a fairly decent but inaccessible editor and instead swaps in a simple text area lacking in all the wonderful features we appreciate in a code editor, namely, syntax highlighting, smart indentation, line numbers, you name it. That's a high price to pay for accessibility.
Please correct me if I am wrong in any of the points above.
Best,
Felix

But ChromeOS DOES have a fairly decent text editor.
Here's a recent highlighting of it:https://chromeunboxed.com/how-to-use-the-chromebook-text-app

I disagree strongly here, we do in the linux world too have many
different apps that we can install, they may technically not be a part
of the linux OS, but the users can install and config them as they
please. What is more now that i know about it , i can go in, hit
settings, turn on screen reader mode, and read, and what is more
write. Note i am not saying that i am right , about this, but i
disagree.
We do as well if i am not mistaken enable the screen reader, it is
something that google have decided that we as their users have the
option of doing. IIRC. chromevox, is an extension that we turn on, and
off. But I could be wrong.
Felix, are you absolutely sure that VI, or Pico, does not work? I know
that me and chime did mess a little bit around with it, and i know
that he has it working on his native linux, as it is, and i do
remember i had some problems with it, but i must admit, i did not try
that option hard.

Hi Sandi,
I am open to debate about this. If you think you have figured out a
way to edit code on Chrome OS, I'd be excited if you could give a
demonstration. I feel this should include at least indentation and
going to a particular line number.
You've got my attention and curiosity!
Thanks and have a lovely day,
Felix

Hi Felix and others, I just tried the text app, which I have been
laying around for some time now. To be honest, I use it sometimes when
writing a book, and I need to read shorter parts for a larger file.
And it is true as soon as you turn on screen reader mode, all the
gooddies go out the window. To give an even better analogy it is like
going to fly an airplane, with a glass cockpit, to go back to flying a
j3, or my beloved Storch, i think you misunderstand me Felix, the
point that i am disagreeing on, is, if there should be an editor
included. But of course we shall have the option to use proper
software, i will take this point even further, i love my Pigo, i think
that is pretty clear for everyone, but some of the things at least i
use it for is overly complex, and it is very simple , if google do not
do anything about this, users will go elsewhere. I love the fact that
i can take a chromebook, configure it to a blind person, and send it
off so the user can open it up, and start using right away, it is not
3 weeks ago i have done this. I love it, and it is the reason i have 3
chromebooks now, but because we have good software now, does not mean
that we have to stop, we always need to reach up, further, and better
ourselves. Atl least if you ask me. Apple have just proven this in
their latest iphone, and i am not saying we shall start a iphone pixel
phone debate, cause we shall not but some help from google how to
write code on the chromebook, would be a nice way of getting more
software written for the computers, phones, and tablets. I personally
don't wanna be a part of the software writing team. But demonstrating
and advocating for it, that is where my skills are, and should be put
to good use.
I still remember when i bought my first chromebook it cost $100, i
was, and am still blown away, and when it comes to computers
impressing me is , dare i say it out loud, hard. I was up and watching
NASA tv, 4 minutes after i opened it ,and unboxed it. Okay, so that
was a bit of a site track, but i had to share my thoughts. Felix, we
need to get a hold of Chime and find out how he uses his editor on
LInux, so we can see if we can duplicate that on the chromebook. I
will be honest, I have forgotten what he told me to do.
I need to set up my AMP for my keytar, but will look into this. If you
found anything before me, by all means , keep me informed on your
endeavor.

May you as well have a wonderful and gorgeous day.

Namaste.
