Heloo again!
I have another question.
I am a blind developer, and i use visual studio code to do my work.
I already have my debian krostini container set up, and i have installed vs code for linux.
The installation process was accessible with chromevox. But when i try to launch vs code, chromevox is unable to read the screen.
So i did this steps to work with orca on debian container:
1. sudo apt-get update
2. sudo apt-get install orca
3. orca
The debian's terminal gave me error message: kxb unable for display, and orca is not working properly.
How can i reinstall orca and work with vscode on the chromebook?
Thanks for now!

In order for me to get Orca working, I also had to do apt install mate-desktop-environment.

You are better off trying this out in chrome OS flex to be honest, orca has no mapping for Chromebook keyboards and is no longer being maintained in terms of feature updates, only security updates

only console based screen readers like fenrir and speekup, none of which are graphical, I haven't heard much about holdilia at all and the only other option is to use chrome OS flex on an old pc if you don't want to use linux on anything else. the last full update orca got was back in 2014, compare that to chromevox

Hello,

I'm sorry, but the idea that Orca is not being updated, is not seeing new versions, is simply inaccurate. The latest on Github is version 43.Beta. Orca is continuously updated to not only fix bugs, but also to add enhancements that make it more useful. For instance, Orca has seen quite a bit of work to improve Chrome support.

I'm also not sure why Flex will be a better option than ChromeOS for running Orca. What makes it more special? It is true that Chromebooks don't have all the keys, however keys can be remapped, USB and wireless keyboards attached, etc.

those are only bug fixes, not new features which orca so desperately needs, heck, even talkback gets more updates than orca, and orca currently does not even work with google chrome in fedora, nore does it support qt apps, when it comes to linux, accessibility is a huge weekness

Funny, I'm typing this in Fedora using Chrome and Orca. Orca has gotten new features, continues to get updates, continues to get language string updates, etc. There has also been quite of work been put into improving QT apps, improving KDE's desktop, improving Gnome... I cannot agree that Linux accessibility isn't being maintained.

the reason its working for you is because you edited configuration files, by default, orca does not work with chrome on fedora. orca still has a long way to go before it can get along with modern UI elements, I could prove that by installing fedora on my old lenovo laptop, if chrome was to work with orca on fedora, the edited configs would have to be default, but not everyone has time to modify things, and while I like fedora a lot, I can'tuse it because chrome is not accessible on it

Hello,

If you are unwilling to modify configuration files, Orca and Linux isn't for you. Exporting a variable in .bashrc takes two seconds, most distros have already done this, therefore I don't see the issue. Again, this is very different than saying that Orca doesn't work on a particular platform.

I suggest that if we want to debate further, that we take this off-list, as this conversation really isn't on topic for this list.

I was just asking. Don’t have that   much experience with linux. Was planning on messing around with it   on an older pc that I have here.as most of my newer machines have been on windows 11 and probably have access to windows for subsystem to linux if I want to  go that route .

You'll probably want to use

orca&

to start Orca without hogging up the terminal. I've gotten VS Code to work well through Crostini. You may also find that plugging in an external keyboard will help you, especially with using Orca's keyboard commands with the Insert key.

Hello everyone!
First, i would like to thank everyone for helping me to use orca on chromebook's crostini container.
Finally, i was successfull on setting up my development environment with orca and visual studio code.
I would like to make a tutorial explaining how did i do it.
I hope finishing it on next week.
Can post my tutorial on this group?
Regards
