Selenium with chromedriver progressive reduction in performance

I am automating an angular application and have to test few links in the page

1. verify link text

2. click on link to open side panel

3. verify side panel content

4. close side panel

I tested by verifying same link 10 times in a loop and the interaction becomes extremely slow with time

For eg:- Loop 1 step 1 takes milliseconds

Loop 10 step 1 takes 5 seconds

There are no network calls involved

Manually the same works fine 

No issues observed while using firefox driver
