Hey there,

To anyone interested in having access to multiple Twitter accounts through Chromed Bird I have some great news. I've just deployed a service that allows anyone to "clone" any Chrome extension.
This means basically that it'll be possible to install multiple copies of the same extension and they'll all work independently. This way you can install as many Chromed Bird clones as you want and it's possible to authenticate each one of the clones in different Twitter accounts.

The service that makes this possible is http://crxclone.appspot.com/. You can either go there and type Chromed Bird's gallery page URL or use the direct clone link: http://crxclone.appspot.com/extension/encaiiljifbdbjlphpgpiimidegddhic/clone.

I'm not publicly disclosing this yet because App Engine isn't a very reliable environment for JRuby applications yet, and you may experience timeouts every once and while when trying to create new clones. I'm working on improving this right now.

In the mean time I'd love having some beta testers. :) If you like this feature could you please test it and give me your feedback?

Thanks a lot,

Great! I have been searching for this, as I am used to Echofon. Still,
this is a workaround.

What about integrating a multiple account support in Chromed Bird?

Cheers

Hey Frank, yeah, crxclone is some kind of workaround.

However, I don't intend to support multiple accounts 'natively' unless Chromium folks start allowing more than one browser action per extension. Without this the UI would need something to easily allow switching accounts and I don't like any alternative that I can think of (another level of tabs, drop down menu, adding more tabs at the same level, ...) because I feel they would make the UI too cluttered, you'd have to start digging through Chromed Bird's UI until you find your tweets.

Another problem that would arrise from using only one browser action is that color coded icon notifications would become much less efective, as one wouldn't know from which account the messages are coming from.

Yet another problem: You probably wouldn't want the same visible tabs and refresh interval settings for all your accounts, that would lead for an even more complicate and scary options page. (I already find it too scary today!)

So these are my thoughts about it, did you have any other ideas on how Chromed Bird might support multiple accounts without turning it into a UI monster? :)

UPDATE: Google has now blocked the installation of Chrome extensions unless installed through the Chrome Web Store.

Fear not, you can still get this to work:
  1. Head to the clone appspot service: http://crxclone.appspot.com/extension/
  2. Paste the following ID into the box. You can find this on the Chrome Web Store yourself by looking in the URL for the extension, but here it is: encaiiljifbdbjlphpgpiimidegddhic
  3. You will now see a "Grab your clone" button, simply right-click and "Save link as" to download the extension rather than install it automatically.
  4. Now drag the file downloaded into the Chrome Extensions screen (chrome://extensions/)
Done!
