Hi all,

Looking into chromebooks or chromebases as a potential option for our public access terminals in libraries.

We currently use Library management system details to determine what filtering category is provided to the user and was wondering if this kind of thing would be possible.

Regardless of filtering a record of who is using the devices at particular times and date is a statutory requirement so a way to identify this is vital.

I have seen a ChromeOS based system which has a popup prior to the session which requests an ID and Date of birth - I know these are looked up against their LMS and I presume are logged.

I presume that the "Public Session" option is used, but how would one go about presenting a "login box" prior to a session? I guess this would be a case of writing some kind of app?

Cheers

As far as I am aware the only option for ChromeOS currently is LibData.
They have a time and print management system that works with ChromeOS, PC and Mac.

For ChromeOS Libdata requires a managed public session so you need to have a Google Apps domain.
The Libdata app is set added to the profile for the public session and provides, log in, time and print management.
The LibData system interfaces with the library database (ILS) using the SIP2 protocol so patrons can be allowed or denied for most things that SIP2 can return like overdues, excessive fines or age categories.

We do not currently have this system deployed at any of our libraries but have libraries interested in it as they move more public machines to Chrome devices.
I have tested the system in our PC lab, it works very well and pricing is reasonable.

Our library Chromebooks are outside of our print management and session management systems.

There have been many posts here detailing the heartache and tsuris of trying to get incumbent systems designed for Windows machines in to work with ChromeOS, but I believe there have been a few success stories as well.  YMMV.

Good Luck!

Thanks all for your replies, useful info. I'll take a look at LibData.

I think we have a plan of action which would pretty much use the devices out of box - with managed public sessions of course.

One thing that still interests me is the application which pops up prior to the session launching, I'm intrigued as to how this works. If I could get this to interact with a captive portal (as i presume the setup we looked at does exactly this) this would be perfect.

Let the research continue.

Cheers
