Hello!  I have finally been able to work on some computer shopping for our library and I am dismayed at the lack of Chromebase models available.  The only one I can find is the newest HP Chromebase 22 AIO and it is unacceptable because it has no ethernet port.  I am not going to run a staff machine or a public workstation off of the wifi.

Have you heard anything about new models coming out?  I could switch to Chromeboxes but part of what I really like about the Chromebase is one plug instead of 2 for each station.  Last time I bought a bunch of Chromebases was 2020 and they got deployed slowly because of COVID and we did not have need of them to all be put out at the same time.  I am hoping this is just a supply chain issue, I would hate to start over with buying monitors and Chromeboxes.

Hey Michelle,

As far as I know, that is the only Chromebase (all-in-one) on the market. I'm surprised that no other company has come out with one.

What are your qualms with running them off wifi? We have a separate, locked and hidden wireless network that we use for such things. Some examples being: our two iMacs, and in-library patron laptops. This wireless network is completely separate from our staff wireless and main public wireless networks, and we haven't had any issues.

It’s not about security but connectivity.  Our buildings are all steel studs and one is mostly underground so signals are not great.  I’d like to leave our wifi bandwidth available for patrons and not take a bunch of it up with staff machines.  I guess everything is becoming wireless now so I should get on board.  The other thing I am not thrilled about with the HP Chromebase is the honking big speaker, not really made for the “quiet” computing atmosphere of the library, LOL.

For signal issues we switched to using Netgear Orbi Pro satellites throughout the building. It solved most if not all our problem areas. They are pricy units, but you just need one hooked to ethernet and we get our full speeds throughout the building. Also, while the screens are a bit smaller and it is a laptop I recommend going with this model https://www.cdwg.com/product/acer-chromebook-317-cb317-1h-17.3-celeron-n5100-4-gb-ram-32-gb-emm/6675545?enkwrd=acer%2b317. It is supported until 2030 and the screen size is 17”. I purchased these for our mobile training lab and am very pleased with them.

Thanks Jake!  In use the Orbi at home for my wifi so I could put a satellite one out in the detached garage for my husband to blast his Pandora radio out there.  So far they have been very reliable.

I have a message from my rep at CWD-G about Chrombases

“Chromebases are EOL and none more coming but we will also be announcing a new Chromebox and an “Add In One” display built for the chromebox allowing it to seamlessly house behind display with a single power cord for both.      Acting much like a chromebase but the advantage for individual repairs or replacements as needed.     Being announced in Q1 so depending on when the customer needs device that could be an option as well.”

I guess it is a mount for the back of a monitor to hold the Chromebox and also power it??

I’ll take it if that is all I can get, but I am sad for the end of Chromebases.

Michelle
