Hi,

We use Chromeboxes with the Kiosk app as event and advertising displays. The advertising displays are "fed" by Google Slides shows that get pushed to them. I have the Chromeboxes setup to restart automatically at 4 a.m. everyday so that fresh content is served up if Marketing has updated the slide shows the previous day.

Recently, one of the advertising displays has been "flashing" slides (slide appears for two seconds, then the screen goes black for two seconds, then the slide appears for two seconds, repeat) after the automatic restart. We've resolved it by manually shutting the Chromebox down and turning it back on, which stops the flashing. The Chromeboxes were purchased about two years ago and are good until 2030. This issue is happening with only this unit of the eight we have deployed.

Has anyone experienced an issue like this and if so, how did you rectify it?

Thanks!

Does your chromebox power the monitor? Have you checked the USB cable? Although your workaround argues against a power supply problem, we have seen some similar, intermittent issues with our Lenovo chromeboxes. As simple as the solution was, the inconsistency of the symptoms made us prefer our Asus chromeboxes.

We have Asus Chromeboxes and they are connected to a wall outlet for power. I would think that if it was a cable issue - like the HDMI cable was going bad - it would happen all the time. The HDMI cables were new when the boxes were deployed, so I don't think that is the issue. They last got system updates at the end of April, but this issue started on Wednesday of this week.

You are probably right, but cables - even new ones - are the cause of many intermittent issues. I would recommend swapping those as a matter of course early in your troubleshooting. If you swap two of your chromeboxes and the problem follows the chromebox, you can confirm that the problem is in the chromebox, not the cable or monitor.

With all ChromeOS issues it is usually easiest to start with a powerwash, if that doesn't resolve it follow the reimage (recovery) process. You also should be able to remove the 4am restart by setting the "autoReload" policy on the slides to something like every 30 minutes.
