People often look at Microsoft and scratch their heads. One of the things I want do with this blog is to give people a peek behind the curtains so you understand how things really work. My hope is that once you understand some of this, our actions and attitudes will be a little less befuddling.
One of the things you need to understand about Microsoft is that we spend > $7 Billion a year in R&D. Now couple that with the fact that everyone here works super hard on their stuff and you see why teams find it virtually impossible to keep up with with what is going on with various technologies.
I was super pleased a while back when a team whose door I had been knocking on for a couple of years finally put a dev on the task of prototyping some cmdlets. It was a short while afterwards that I was forwarded an excited email articulating all the things that customers could do with their technology using PowerShell. There were examples after examples and the note ended with the key point: Here is how much code I had to write to get this (and there was a small section of code).
It was at that point that they were able to see the "real deal" of the PowerShell value proposition: small amount of code yields huge customer advantage. I had been telling them that for years but the reality is that everyone that knocks on their door tells a variation of that story. When they understood it for themselves they were hooked.
Microsoft Works was an all-in-one scaled-down Word Processor, Spreadsheet, and Database geared towards the home user. It was released in variants for early DOS, Windows, and Macintosh. Microsoft Works competed against Lotus Jazz, FrameWork, AlphaWorks/LotusWorks, PFS First Choice, and many others.
Microsoft Works started development as "Mouseworks" from "Productivity Software", and involved developers of the original Apple II AppleWorks. The first release was in 1986 for the Apple Macintosh. It seems that Microsoft purchased it mainly to compete with Lotus Jazz.
Works was a completely different product from, and even competed against, Microsoft Office. Occasionally, Works was bundled with a version of Word, to cover for weaknesses and lack of popularity of the native word processor in the package. Works was commonly bundled with many OEM PCs as an entry-level lower-cost alternative to Microsoft Office. Microsoft Works was discontinued in 2007, with the final version being 9.0.
Did a reset of my computer saving files and photos. However, lost administrator account and lost all files and photos. Have reinstalled from a back-up flash drive, but no longer have Microsoft Works to open many documents. Is there any way to download Microsoft Worksand Task Launcher? This factory installed on my computer 7 years ago with Windows 7. It was operating with Windows 10, until my reset today. Thank you.
If you have a documents created with Works and saved in the old Works file format, you will need to use this free utility and convert the files to newer MS Office format so that you can read your old docs >> -us/download/details.aspx?id=12
Thanks for your response. I have Microsoft Office 2000 Premium, which works fine in Windows 10. So, I could potentially convert the Microsoft Works documents to Microsoft Word and Excel. I downloaded the convertor, but have not been able to find out if it will work with Microsoft Office 2000. Although the convertor is in my program list, it does not seem to open or do anything?
Last time I have seen MS Works was with old PC - version 8 - many many years ago. Not sure if it works on Windows 10 as Windows 10 is special as it might reject quite a lot of old software due to being non-compatible. From what I see during my research for this issue, all that is needed is to just install the software.
My laptop crashed and I had to take it to the Geek Squad. They had to wipe my hard drive and reset my computer. THey saved my files but not my programs. All of my info is saved under 2007 Microsoft Works Task Launcher.
