Greetings,

I am having problems using the chrome Vox text to speech functions with chromebooks in Gmail.

The following occurs with both of my Dell chromebooks.  I have one rather high end one for personal use and a more bare-bones version for work.

  1. I log into the Chromebook as normal.
  2. I launch Gmail from the launch menu (alt-shift-l.)
  3. I arrow up and down till I find an email I want to read.
  4. I hit enter and open the email.
  5. Once in the body of the email I tab or attempt to enable sticky mode to navigate using ‘h’ and arrow down to read the message.
  6. Chromevox goes silent.  Sometimes it restarts, sometimes I have to do it manually.
  7. Half the time the sound affect plays from when chromevox turns on and is immediately followed by the turning off affect.
  8. I can, if I can get chromevox to work, use the shift-I command to go back to my inbox.  Normal webpage browsing works fine…it’s just emails that give me problems.
  9. I’ve fully updated both devices and the problem has not resolved even after fully powering them down and up again.
  10. I am using different accounts on these machines (one my personal login and the other my State employee login.)

Any suggestions?

  1.

Hi Matthew,

This is a known issue and we have a fix coming in v70 for Chromebooks. This should be coming very soon, so I would suggest waiting for this to come as an update.

Apologies for the instability here.

Thanks,
David

Much obliged sir.

It is heartening to know google is on it already.

Do we have an estimated release date for this fix?  I need to know roughly how long I need to use alternate tools at work if possible.

Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

The fix is slated for the 70 release. You can either move yourself to the beta channel or wait for 70 to be declared stable. The latter should occur within a week or so if all is as expected.

Thanks for your understanding,
David

No worries.

I appreciate Google’s responsiveness on these issues.

Be well.
