Aaron,
Let's try and compare build logs. Can you navigate to ~/chroma_env/src/chroma. And run the following:
(chroma_env)[will@falco chroma]$ rm -r build/
(chroma_env)[will@falco chroma]$ python setup.py develop > setup.log
