I've been using HDClone professional since version 4 and it's been a great tool for a sysadmin that travels somewhat. I install it to my workstation and then create bootable USB or CD and can clone on user systems or the occasional travel laptop.

What's happened with the update to 6 on the PROFESSIONAL version is that the USB and CD can only be used on the machine that the software is currently installed on. Keep in mind that this is professional version software. Trying to use the USB or CD on another system prompts you to activate the USB using one of your 2 permanent activations. If you have no internet and need to rescue a desktop and have your bootable USB with you thinking you can restore a backup that you've taken using version 4 or 5, you will have wasted your time.

Hdclone will output to a file as well as cloning to another disk. So you would have to manually restore to other computers.
I use it move to new disks only.
I'm guessing if you setup a computer as new and did sysprep you could then clone to file with hdclone. That way you could image computers.
Why don't you just setup window deployment services (wds) its built into windows server so there is no cost.

Ok i didn't check your username. I don't really know about imaging Linux boxes or whether wds will support Linux images. I'd guess it doesn't.
Assuming the distro you using supports being moved to after computer then hdclone will image to file just fine. I can't recall if it support dumping the image on an smb share. If it does then you can implement what you have planned with just a samba share.

I actually discovered something with HD Clone that did not see before that may be what I am looking for. First, let me explain what I am doing that seems to work. I own a professional license for HD Clone so I get top speed out of the program. I am now maintaining an image in Virtual Box using a VHD as the virtual hard drive format. I completely set up the machine the way that I want, then I run my sysprep on it (but not before shutting it down and cloning it to have a pre-sysprepped version). After sysprep runs and completes (I have an Unattend file and a setup complete batch file in the appropriate locations) and the system shuts down, I mount the VHD as a drive on my Windows 7 system and then capture it using HD Clone.

The latest version of HDClone Professional Edition can be installed on PCs running Windows XP/XP Professional/Vista/7/8/10/11, 32-bit. The program's installer is commonly called hdclone.exe, cmd.exe or hdclone64.exe etc. This program is an intellectual property of Miray Software AG. Our built-in antivirus scanned this download and rated it as 100% safe. The current installation package available for download occupies 95.3 MB on disk.

This is a powerful and versatile disk cloning software for Windows-based systems. It offers various features and tools that allow you to clone, back up, and restore your hard drives quickly and efficiently. Its sector-by-sector cloning method, incremental backup, and rescue and recovery system make it an excellent choice for personal and professional use.

The Free Edition of HDClone clones an entire hard disk to another, larger medium. Use it for migrating an existing installation to a new hard disk or for rescuing data.
In case of more frequent usage, we recommend using one of the higher editions since they offer higher performance, support for a wider range of hardware, and additional options which are optimized for regular or professional use.

Based on the user feedback, you can notice such a disadvantage of this program as it is very slow. The downloadable file requires 95.3 MB on your hard drive. The most popular versions of the program are 6.0, 5.1 and 4.3. You can find it in the System Utilities category on our website.
