What was clear from MW3's multiplayer beta - mainly a mixture of team deathmatches and a couple of other modes - was how it felt like MW in the hands. Movement was snappy and the process of unlocking silly little attachments didn't require the brainpower of a calculus professor and a spreadsheet to keep track. Gunplay was vintage COD, each weapon quickly occupying the "binned off" or the "this is the GOAT" sections of my brain from just a few taps of the trigger. Yep, MW3 very much seems to keep the personality of the guns alive.

Extra punch has been added to all the little arcadey noises that pop from headshots or body blows or when yellow EXP numbers flash up on screen, too. It might seem like a nothing addition, but it actually helped make the moment to moment carnage of COD feel more satisfying. MW3 might not be making sweeping changes to multiplayer, but it's on track to recapture fans in its renewed feedback loop.

So yeah, I genuinely had fun with MW3's multiplayer beta. It was nice to revisit old haunts and partake of some classic FPS action. Yet, I can't shake the sense that MW3 is COD on the backfoot, a stopgap reliant on cozy familiarity while anxiety swims under its surface. For now, I'd say I'm eager to get more time with MW3 and see how it's tweaked other modes like Zombies and Warzone. I just can't stop thinking: where does COD go from here? Does it even know where it wants to go?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Multiplayer has been out in the world for a couple weeks, and we are thrilled to see that it has come with a great sentiment from the Call of Duty community, who have responded particularly well to the more fluid movement system and the modernized return of the 16 fan-favorite maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

Infinity Ward's rebooted Modern Warfare 2 brings back a more classic Call of Duty multiplayer experience than we've seen in recent years, with maps better tailored to traditional 6v6 play and dialed-back movement mechanics. Modern Warfare 2's gameplay really feels like a refreshing return to old times again for Call of Duty, but unfortunately, the package as a whole feels lacking and gun customization is overly complex.

Upon returning to the Modern Warfare series, Infinity Ward set out to create a game ripped straight from the real world terrorism that exists in modern-day 2019. A week before the game's reveal, studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki and single-player director Jacob Minkoff explained to journalists this new game as a more mature, authentic and relevant Call of Duty game that's not a superhero caricature, but instead, a down-to-earth representation of the realities of being a soldier. "It's taking scenarios that are "ripped from the headlines."[5] Among the stated goals for the game's campaign: "Create an emotional connection through the realities of war," and "Push the boundaries of the medium."[6]

In an interview with GameSpot, Kurosaki was asked what re-imagining the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to be relevant in the world today means to him and what are some of the key inspirations. Kurosaki responded "Sure, well, the original game was ripped from the headlines. But it was ripped from the headlines of 2007. And now, here we are 12 years later, and the world has further changed. I would say that compared to 2007, Operation Iraqi Freedom or whatever it was, that was a kind of traditional warfare. Those were guys in tanks, fighting other guys in tanks and Jeeps, and this side wore this uniform and this other side wore a different uniform, and this side flew this flag, and the other side flew the other flag.

Today, modern warfare means that the war isn't just over there. That the war is everywhere. It's in our own backyards. It's in places that can suddenly become a battlefield at a moment's notice. It's about enemies who don't wear uniforms. It's about civilian collateral damage kind of being, unfortunately, part of the equation. When we set out to make this game, we asked ourselves a very literal question. We just said, 'What do the words modern warfare mean in 2019?' Not what does the game name mean, but those words as just words: modern warfare. And for us, it meant that a busy city center could be the site of a terrorist attack. That a residential compound could be the safe house of a terror cell, that commandos have to go into and eliminate the cell. It means that it's not the only sort of John Wayne-style American G.I.s, but it's also local militias and freedom fighters. Where families are hit by airstrikes and people have to pick up the pieces by picking up arms and fighting for their own independence. That, to us, was the definition of modern warfare and if we didn't have all of those elements in this game, we wouldn't be doing justice to that name."[7]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a reboot of the Modern Warfare subseries that takes characters and themes from the original series and presents them in a modern light.[8] John Price returns in this game's campaign.

Modern Warfare is said to deliver an emotionally charged and intense campaign that shines a light on the changing nature of modern war.[9][10] Fight alongside a diverse cast of international special forces, freedom fighters and Arab soldiers[11] Working within the grey area of their rules of engagement in a number of heart-pounding covert operations set throughout iconic European cities and into the volatile expanses of the Middle East.


Modern Warfare's multiplayer mode features signature Call of Duty fast-paced and grounded combat while also introduces brand new game types and experiences from 2v2 Gunfight matches to 100+ players in Ground War. Ditching class-based combat from previous titles, the game aims to accommodate all play styles by providing more customization options to the players, featuring deep weapon augmentation in the Gunsmith and replacing Specialists with Operators. Modern Warfare is also the first game in the franchise to feature crossplay across consoles and PC.

On September 17th, 2019, Activision revealed that Post-launch gameplay content, including new multiplayer maps, new multiplayer modes as well as new Special Ops missions will be released simultaneously across all platforms.[14]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been a staple of the first-person shooter genre since the brand first launched in 2003. The game has gone through many iterations with different changes attached to the series. The multiplayer aspect itself has gone through many different modes that are now quite familiar to most out there who probably don't even play the game. The multiplayer menu has a quick play option, which has most of the popular modes available, and there are more targeted modes outside of the quick play menu that are new or have been updated.

Domination and Deathmatch, for example, are modes that most gamers have seen in various other games not just in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. If a player is new to the series, or even for hardcore vets, some recent game modes that have been introduced and tweaked that might need a bit of a run through to know which mode might be more fun for different play styles. Here's a small rundown of each multiplayer mode to help in picking the right mode a simpler one.

Many have been considering 2019's Modern Warfare a return to form for the Call of Duty series, and that certainly seems to be true. After years of struggling to stay relevant through annual releases, the first-person shooter finally released a game that captured the same magic of Call of Duty's golden age. Now after only a few months, its online multiplayer has been played more than any game in the series since the days of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Luckily, 2019's Modern Warfare was created with the awareness of what fans felt was missing from the franchise, giving those who loved Call of Duty in the earlier days a reason to come back. The title did away with large scale chicanery and futuristic weapons, and brought the series back to grounded warfare, addicting gameplay, and excellent gun customization. On top of this, Activision has plans to regularly update the game, and have already added a slew of new maps since its October release date.

Following its odd little pre-amble last night, Activision and developer Sledgehammer have given Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 the full reveal treatment, sharing first details on its campaign, multiplayer, and zombies mode, alongside a brief look at the game in action.

Over in Modern Warfare's multiplayer mode, Activision is touting "one of the greatest collections of...maps ever assembled". That starts with the return of all 16 multiplayer maps from 2009's Modern Warfare 2 - Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Karachi, Highrise, Invasion, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland - which have been all be rebuilt from the ground up, featuring refinements and modern visuals for 6v6 play.

A mix of brand-new multiplayer modes - a competitive 3v3v3 mode known as Cutthroat is mentioned - and returning options, including Hardpoint and Kill Confirmed, will be playable on these core maps at launch, and Activision is also promising three new Battle Maps - described as large scale locations where Ground War and Invasion game modes take place - and one "colossal" War map that'll play host to an evolved version of War Mode.

Players can expect a mix of new and returning features across Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer. On the new pile is a togglable Tactical Stance feature described as the "perfect middle-ground between hip-fire and aiming down sights". This is intended for cramped, close-quarter combat situations, and trades accuracy for improved mobility and handling. Elsewhere there are expanded loadout options in Create-a-Class, plus After-Market Parts in Gunsmith, enabling players to construct unique weapon configurations or types.
