Subject: Post-graduate courses and Workshops in Environmental Education at Rhodes University

Dear Colleagues

This serves as a second notification of the post-graduate courses that are available for environmental educators at Rhodes University in 2011/12.  It may be of interest that the recent Environmental Sector Skills Plan for South Africa identified the need for more Environmental Educators who are able to offer high quality environmental training programmes in a range of contexts / sectors.  Rhodes University offers courses that allow for this specialisation in education. The courses outlined below are all located in the brand new Environmental Learning Research Centre at Rhodes University, which also houses a ‘Sustainability Commons’ project. The centre is located at the gates of the Makana Botanical Gardens and provides a wonderful environment for learning and research. The Masters course is co-ordinated by the Murray & Roberts Chair of Environmental Education, still the only Chair of Environmental Education in Africa.

MASTERS DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The Masters Degree in Environmental Education is offered in both part time or full time, coursework and/or full thesis formats.  The course is offered in ‘block sessions’ allowing full time working professionals to undertake the course over a 2 year period. The course is suitable for educators working at the people-environment interface from a range of different subjects or learning areas, and work contexts such as conservation, industry environmental education and training, community education and / or teacher education or NGO/government settings.  The course focuses on the theme ‘Sustainability, learning and social change’, with sub-themes being: 1) Educational responses to socio-ecological issues and risks; 2) Educational quality, quality of life and sustainability in the 21st century; 3) situated learning and social change; 4) sustainability and learning in various educational settings and 5) environment and sustainability education research.

Please not that applications for this course close on 30 OCTOBER 2010.  NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.  Contact Sashay.a...@ru.ac.za for further information, and for application forms. Please submit a CV, a letter of motivation and study records with the Rhodes University application form.

ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The Environmental Learning Research Centre also offers an Advanced Certificate in Environmental Education and Training. This course is open to anyone with a matric plus 3 year qualification who is active in environmental education, or who wishes to specialise in environmental education.  The course runs over a two year period in ‘block sessions’, mostly in the school holidays to allow practicing teachers to complete the qualification. It is accessible to a range of other working professionals too, and allows for diverse focus e.g. community education, workplace education and training and/or education in schools and colleges.  The closing date for this programme is 30 NOVEMBER 2011. Please contact m.ja...@ru.ac.za for further details.

OPEN WORKSHOPS

The Environmental Learning Research Centre at Rhodes University will also be running 4 open workshops in 2011. These are short workshops of 2-4 days in duration.  The workshops are on:

·         Environmental Learning in the Workplace (21-23 February 2011)

·         From Footprints to Handprints (18-20 May 2011)

·         Environmental Teaching Practices (11-16 July 2011)

·         Researching Learning (18-23 September 2011)

To book a place on these workshops please contact Sashay.a...@ru.ac.za . These workshops are part of the Sustainability Commons Public Knowledge Project, and no fees will be charged, but participants who book their place are asked to honour their booking so as not to take the place of anyone else who could have come, so please make sure you will definitely be there if you book a place.

Thank you
