Blasphemy twice over in Avignon

Three months ago, Avignon hosted a piece of art which insulted the
image of Jesus Christ: the Lambert collection presented a photograph
of a crucifix in a glass of urine. Today, at the city’s annual
festival, a blasphemous and vulgar theatre piece entitled “Opera
House”, shows a series of acts in succession, an old tramp who has his
bed taken away from him exposing his faeces to the public for a number
of minutes and then a group of children throwing grenades at a large
portrait of Jesus Christ.

Then, technical effects are used to create tears streaming down the
large portrait of Jesus’ face, whose colours, according to a
journalist, “seem to link back to the faeces in the previous scene
rather than resemble blood.”

At the end of the scene, a message appears, which reads: “you are not
my pastor.” Perhaps the “artist”, unable to find inspiration, could
think of nothing better than to try to get publicity with a
provocative and blasphemous message, so he could get paid and obtain
funding.

It would be interesting to see what the reaction would have been had
the face of Muhammad or an Israeli religious figure been used instead
of Christ’s.
