Johnny is a "mnemonic courier" who discreetly transports sensitive data for corporations in a storage device implanted in his brain at the cost of his childhood memories. His current job is for a group of scientists in Beijing. Johnny initially balks when he learns the data exceeds his memory capacity even with compression, but agrees given the large fee will be enough to cover the cost of the operation to remove the device. Johnny keeps it secret that he is overloaded; he must have the data extracted within a few days or suffer fatal brain damage and corrupt the data. The scientists encrypt the data with three random images from a television feed. As they transmit these images to the receiver in Newark, New Jersey, they are attacked and killed by yakuza led by Shinji, who wields a laser whip. Johnny battles the yakuza and grabs a fragment of the encryption key images before escaping. Shinji reports his failure to his superior, Takahashi, their conversation revealing the yakuza is working on behalf of Pharmakom, a megacorporation. Johnny witnesses brief images of a female projection of an artificial intelligence who attempts to aid Johnny, but he dismisses her.

@audiblevideo, poor Greta! Naturally she thinks she is the center of it all. All that weight on those thin shoulders. Really, it is sad, but somehow, as she says, totally absurd. I hope she grows up to be president... of something. Now, back to business... what the hell does mnemonic have to do with it, other than it is a cool word?

I thought mnemonic was an alphabetic device to aid memory...
1.
a system such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations which assists in remembering something.
"the usual mnemonic for star types is O Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me"... (or for us music types Every Good Boy Does Fine)
adjective
1.
aiding or designed to aid the memory.

Second decade of the 21st Century.
Corporations rule.
The world is threatened by a new plague: NAS
Nerve Attentuation Syndrome, fatal, epidemic, its cause and cure are unknown.
The corporations are opposed by the Lo Teks, a resistance movement risen from the streets: hackers, data-pirates, guerilla fighters in the Info Wars.
The corporations defend themselves.
They hire the Yakuza, the most powerful of all crime syndicates.
They sheath their data in black ice, lethal viruses waiting to burn the brains of intruders.
But the Lo Teks wait in their strongholds, in the old city cores, like rats in the walls of the world.
The most valuable information must sometimes be entrusted to mnemonic couriers, elite agents who smuggle data in wet-wired brain implants.

The name Johnny Mnemonic is derived from computer terminology; a mnemonic is a word or acronym used to represent a binary machine instruction code. The more commonly used meaning of the word mnemonic, however, is "helping or meant to help, the memory"; in Johnny's case this meaning is ironic, since he cannot consciously "remember" any of the information clients have stored in his brain.

Set against the backdrop of the futuristic year of 2021 in a dystopian world ravaged by a fatal plague, Johnny (Reeves) is a "mnemonic courier" (data trafficker) who has an implant that allows him to securely store data too sensitive for regular computer networks. Johnny uses this implant to deliver such data between contracting parties. On one delivery run, he accepts a package that not only exceeds the implant's storage capacity (and will kill him if the data isn't removed in 24 hours), but also proves to contain information far more important and valuable than he had ever imagined. Johnny must deliver the data before it kills him, but a Mega-Corp sends assassins out after him to suppress said data.

In 2021, Johnny is a "mnemonic courier" with a data storage device implanted in his brain, allowing him to discreetly carry information too sensitive to transfer across the Net, the virtual-reality equivalent of the Internet. While lucrative, the implant has cost Johnny his childhood memories, and he seeks to have the implant removed to regain his memories back; his handler, Ralfi assigns him one more job that would cover the costs of the operation (which are extremely expensive), sending Johnny to Beijing to deliver the latest information.
