The third season of the animated television series, The Boondocks originally aired in the United States on Cartoon Network's late night programming block, Adult Swim. Season three started on May 2, 2010, with "It's a Black President, Huey Freeman" and ended with "It's Goin Down" on August 15, 2010, with a total of fifteen episodes. The season debuted at 2.55 million viewers.

All fifteen episodes from season three were released completely uncensored on a three-disc DVD set in the United States on November 9, 2010. In addition all episodes from season three are available on the iTunes Store.

Sung Dae Kang and Young Chan Kim served as directors for season three, and series creator Aaron McGruder and Rodney Barnes served as writers for season three. All episodes were rated TV-MA for graphic violence, dangerous activity (mostly involving children), explicit language (mostly heavy use of racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs and bleeped-out profanity), and infrequent instances of strong sexual content. Season three was originally announced to be the show's last; it would ultimately be the last season produced with McGruder's involvement.[1]

She is a horrible writer, and the show should have ended after season 3. Imagine being presumptuous enough to take the job of writing for the greatest cartoon show on television when the original creator wanted it ended. Then writing some of the worst episodes of television history, episodes so bad watching them actually makes you wince

That sort of edge was clearly present in the television adaptation from its start in 2005. During its first season, The Boondocks covered every satirical topic it could muster: the post-9/11 fear mongering, the willingness of people to forgive celebrities for heinous crimes they obviously committed, the horrible diets of the average American, etc. At the same time, some episodes were simply very heightened comedic hijinks that served to give the characters room to grow, sprinkled with moments of satiric jabs and well choreographed action scenes.

After season three of The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder was expected to make a four season due to the success of the third season. He was planning to create it but the problem that made Aaron leave in the fourth season was Adult Swim. They were expecting Aaron to make three episodes a week and anybody should know that you can't pump out good production value unless you have the time or else it will end up a sloppy mess. So as expected, McGruder wasn't going to take it but Adult Swim ended up firing him. The fourth season ended after ten episodes and it was named the worst season of the show with it not being the same without the creator similar to SpongeBob and fans were literally begging for Adult Swim to put the show out of its misery.

After awhile, it seemed as if The Boondocks would never return and it was gone for good but after three years it was revealed that the show would return for a fifth season in 2018 which was the next year. People were hesitant about how it would end up until it was revealed that Aaron McGruder was returning with a reasonable schedule. The season started off promising with a episode about Donald Trump called "Republic Chaos" and many critics said it felt like seasons one-three. The season would go on for fourteen more episodes and would last from September 19th to December 26th. It was revealed a little bit after the end of the fifth season that the show would have a season six possibly in 2020.

Over its three-season run on Cartoon Network, The Boondocks has earned a Peabody award and garnered smash ratings for the network (the season 3 premiere drew 2.5 million viewers despite a two-year hiatus between seasons 2 and 3).

For a long time it was said that The Boondocks would be finished after season 3 - much to the dismay of the show's fiercely loyal fanbase. Many viewers (and even some celebrities) have since voiced their desire to see The Boondocks return for season 4, and there have been some rumblings from the direction of the show's cast of voice actors, which suggested that fans' wishes might be fulfilled.

Here's how it went: Romano was discussing the face that she's worked with various big studios - including Sony, the studio behind The Boondocks cartoon series. Very little gets by yours truly, and in the midst of Romano's speech I noticed she was referring to her work on The Boondocks in the PRESENT TENSE, rather than the past tense. I couldn't just let that slip by, so I asked Romano if indeed she was getting back to work casting and directing new voices for The Boondocks season 4, to which she responded:

They're making new ones - I just got word they're gonna make another season. Can you believe it? After all this time. It's been out of production for almost two years...The line producer sent me an email and said 'I believe it's snowing in hell - do you know what that means?' and I said, 'Are we making more episodes?' Because we all said 'It'll snow in hell before we make more,' because we just never thought after that much time they would [make it]. But apparently there is a fanbase desire and I love the show. I love making the show.

So there you have it: Huey, Riley, Grandad and the gang will be back! Of course we still don't know when the show will actually make it back onto the airwaves, but if past seasons are any indication, they'll need a while to get things together.

Adult Swim's cartoon adaptation of Aaron McGruder's acclaimed comic strip became a breakout hit after its first season, and maintained high acclaim for three seasons (2006, 2008, 2010). Things hit the wall after some difficulties with Season Three, and after a lengthy delay, Season Four of The Boondocks was released in 2014, carrying the black mark of having absolutely no involvement from McGruder.

With so little to go on right now, there's no way to know if McGruder is in any way involved with this season, or if other members of the original creative team (Brian Ash, Carl Jones) are involved as well. If the project is on Witherspoon's radar (given his clearly loose knowledge of events), it's safe to assume that the principal voice cast of the series has been tapped to return.
