That's a bit fraught with difficulties, Puppet does this and I'd say thats a bad pattern ime. We'd soon need to add configuration then for username, mode etc on this directory and have to decide what to do if those don't match etc, on multiple operating systems etc.
Does other daemons do this generally? Can't say it's something I noticed but I also dont change log locations typically so not sure if its a common pattern.
