Dear Friends and Colleagues,

 

I’m writing to tell you that my health has taken an unexpected turn.  I have been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment, which, in my case, seems to be a progressive process on the path to Early-Onset Dementia. 

 

Recently, I have been increasingly concerned about my level of function, so this diagnosis is a very believable explanation for why I’ve been struggling to keep up in my roles as physician and Residency Program Director.  These are beloved roles for me that I have enjoyed immensely, but now find overwhelming and unsustainable. 

 

I will be stepping down from clinical duties and from the Program Director role.  Joe St. Geme and I have been in discussion and he is poised to expeditiously complete an internal search for a successor for the PD role.  He will be sending out an email shortly to explain the process more thoroughly. 

 

Everyone has been amazingly (but not surprisingly) supportive as I navigate this next phase of my career and life.  I’m looking forward to that chapter after I support the transition to a new PD.

 

Words cannot describe what a privilege it has been to work with you as clinicians and colleagues dedicated to training the next generation of pediatricians.  I am grateful for my 18 years at CHOP, which has been unquestionably the most inspiring and rewarding years of my professional life.

I thought "giving Tueday" would be an appropriate time to move this forward. As you all have seen, this D list is very much alive with a wonderful and caring group of friends. We had a whopping 39 people respond, which is basically the whole class and probably represents everyone on this list. Amazing.

I think the $2500 stone is very obtainable. With 39 people the individual cost is $64 each.

I'm going to contact the donation office to see if it is possible for everyone to make individual donations, or if everyone needs to go through me. We also need to decide on an inscription. 

The limitations are:

·         Engraving is restricted to two lines of text, containing up to 40 total characters per line.

·         Characters include letters, spaces, and punctuation (i.e. periods after middle initials).

As such, we could do something like:

Hello Everyone,

I'm very happy to report that we are over the $2,500 goal, total donation was $2,642! Well done!

The next round of paving stone inscriptions will take place in the spring. Paver installation depends on appropriate weather conditions and is subject to change. They don’t have an exact date set, but they anticipate sometime between April and May.

Also, I'm happy to report that Meredith, Evan, and I are brainstorming a fun way to "give" Dr. Z the gift. We are actually thinking it would be fun to do a little video - perhaps everyone preparing a *very short* iPhone video saying "hello" and "thank you", that we will edit together. We have lots of time, as I think it makes sense to wait until near the installation date... so say tuned for more details!

Hi everyone! 

OK, David talked me into it. We were thinking that a nice way to tell her about the paving stone would be with a video splicing together our classmates saying "Thank you" (a la the Nicole laugh video). Participation is definitely optional! (Although if I don't have enough videos, I'll probably abandon it since 4 people would be kind of dumb.) 

What I need is THREE brief selfie style videos (like 1-3 seconds EACH) of you saying: 

1. Hi or Hello AND 

2. Thank you AND

3. We love you vs You inspire us vs the unburdening hand gesture vs a blooper vs something else

You can also send me ONE VIDEO with you saying all those things in a row and I can cut it myself. 

You can do it! This activity will take a total of 1 minute. Please send HORIZONTAL videos. 

Love you guys! Of course I'll send it out to you guys when it's done.

Dear, Sweet Intern Class of 2013,

I received your email and... well... it blew me away.  

The video, the paving stone, the warmth, the humor, the love are such an extension of the wonderful people that you are.  With tears and smiles I have watched and rewatched the video TNTC times, and each time it touches me down to my toes, warms my heart, and makes me smile.  

Thank you seems inadequate, but it is heartfelt.  You honor me with your kindness and rekindle a connection to each of you that is real and precious.

Please know that I am doing well.  I'm finding ways of working with the parts of my brain that still function quite nicely, and laughing at my inevitable foibles as I navigate life.  In some ways it's not that different from anyone else.  Maybe I'm just more appreciative 😉
