Ive also tried Black screen on systems with Intel integrated GPU to no avail. The system is installed on a DELL Latitude 5480 laptop with iGPU and Nvidia 930MX I'm not sure what information you'll need so just request and I'll try to deliver.

The most important thing that you absolutely mustn't do is blacklist the intel drivers, Optimus works by relaying the image over the intel card connected to the display, you have to have the intel graphics modules available. You will likely also not want to do set kernel parameters without actually having identified the need for them.

I've been following the Use NVIDIA graphics only for my part it seems to be the simplest route to accomplish ideal performance from the discrete GPU. I've found it to drain the battery no faster than using the iGPU.

I'm using i3 with no display manager so i belive .xinitrc is the proper file to add these lines to. The first line seems to be requied to get any image at all, and the third scaled the status bar properly. Everything seems to be working properly except that the wallpaper is split into nine parts and dunst notifications don't show up. If I then set the wallpaper again it will show up properly until the next restart. If that matters here's the wallpaper script:

You will want to swap the --auto and the --setprovideroutputsource calls order, also call other tools after the xrandr calls. Set up proper resolution with xrandr and ensure you are calling other things depending on the resolution after those were set. In doubt post your .xinitrc.

I have just installed ubuntu 18.04 LTS on my Assus 556-UX notebook with Nvidia 930MX card. I have noticed that in the 'details' section in 'Settings' it still says the graphic card is the intel's on-board card, so I wanted to install the nvidia driver. I am new to linux, what is the best way of doing this?

I haven't been able to find a fix for the "micro-stutters", but this issue is subjective and will bother some users more than others (I'm in the former group, it bothers me a lot - so much so that I have uninstalled the proprietary Nvidia drivers and am currently using the Nouveau drivers, which are much "smoother" for most desktop functions).

At the begining i didn't have any problem at running games like grid 2 at medium, or bataman arkam asylum, but after updating windows all the aplications that use 3D graphics doesnt start and stop working, including SolidWorks that I use for school. I have noticed that with the Intel HD620 disabled they works, but isnt the best solution since i can not turnd down or up the brighness of the screen. Also, when I connect another monitor to my laptop, SolidWorks works perfectly, but games doesnt.

My drivers are all up to date, and specificly with the intel's graphics driver i try with the last provided by Asus (2016), and also with the last from Intel (February 2018) resulting the same problem.

I have just manually installed the new driver on the link, but it still doesn't works, and actually i have notice a higher usage on CPU cores when i turn up the computer, much more usage than with the last driver i tried, but just for a few minutes.

I did that before making my post here, but however I have just tried again and make no difference. Specifically with SolidWorks I selected Nvidia high performance as preffered, but when right-click on the shortcut from the desktop, it appears Intel integrated graphics as default for this program. However seleccting or not nvidia high performance and monitoring at the task manager, it runs like for a second with nvidas gpu (GPU 1) and then turn to intel's (GPU 0) and freeze.

From the last time i return to the driver provided by Asus because of the matter with the cpu usage at start, and i have noticed another curious thing. I'm used to work with a second monitor when i'm house, and when I turn the driver back to the one by Asus, Solidworks works perfectly when this second monitor is conected (the monitor is VGA 1366x768) but when i disconect it, the program sptop working correctly (as before).

Ok, I tried again following the stepts in the NVIDIA control panel, but it doesn't make any difference, is there anything that I could be making wrong? should I restart or something after the steps? is there a way to run the Nvidia control panel as administrator?

-I tried disconnecting, but the program stop working if i try to make any change on the document. Something similar occurs when I disabled the graphics adaptor on the device manager, Solid do works, and if I re-enabled the adaptor it still working until i try opening another document, i mean, it works perfectly with the documents opened before with the adaptor deactivated, but any other document thru the adaptor crash the program.

-Im on Solidworks 2017, but the problem is in general with apps that uses the GPU. With games (from steam library) some of them like DeadSpace drop a notice window saying that can't initialize the hardware, with GRID 2 it just run the logo and keep restarting the game, with Adobe Lightroom Clasic and Adobe Photoshop CC it behaves like Solid. The only program work just perfect is Adobe Illustrator CC, actaully it gives me GPU preview from the NVIDIA.

So, IF the Nvidia site is correct, the standard Bumblebee install with the 361.28 driver should work if all the steps are done carefully.

Of course we cannot rule out that the GPU - driver - bumblebee combination might still have quirks that prevent bumblebee from running.

It should do no harm anyway. Also, please be aware that the process of installing nvidia-bumblebee, downloading the driver itself from Nvidia, building the kernel modules takes time, up to a couple minutes on some systems, take care not to interrupt it.

Check that a file about 87 MB named NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28.run has been downloaded to /usr/src/

Check that needed kernel modules are indeed in place:

I manage to put the back cover by carvin a little space just for the cable on the edge of the cover. It is not perfect but its close. I manage to put almost all the screws but not the one next to were the cable is, because the cover is a little bent:

? But I think the bigger bottle neck for gaming is that this mPCI NGFF conection is only PCIe x1 (3.0) wich can only provide 1GBps (correct me if i'm wrong).

If somebody knows how to improve this I would appreciate.

Btw, I have a similar laptop to you in a Vivobook X51UAR, with a 8250u and just a UHD 620. This is the first post I have seen online with someone getting a egpu working on this laptop. It gives me hope to use the vivobook for more than just internet browsing in the future.

Recently I bought a GTX 1060, and suprisingly, the CoD Warzone experience improved drastically. Now with in 1080p in low settings it ranges from 50 to 80 fps. Wich in my case is very playable. ? Other games like FarCry Primal run even in 1440p with 40 to 60 fps.

We're lucky AMD has gotten better and is forcing intel to at least give us more cores and threads. I can imagine how hard the 7500u struggles in some games. Warzone has like 150 player or something like that??? that's a lot of work for the cpu...I'm surprised how well your cpu is performing there to be honest

I'm wondering if this will work with my Vivobook 14. But this is the closest build in here that I can refer to. Thanks for sharing. I hope the mPCIe isn't blacklisted in my model. I have no way of checking.

Hi Paulo, thank you for your really well made guide, i have your same model but with i7 8th gen core, intel UHD620 and 940mx dGpu, my question is, how did you manage to close the back cover of the laptop? or you have had to leave it opened

@paulo_da_silva_silveira,Thank you really much, this was the main doubt that was stopping me buying exp gdc, i'll do it today. For the gpu i think i'll go for a used one, maybe a 1050ti. Disabling the dgpu was enough to avoid driver conflicts? I have read many discussion where it was suggested to use amd gpu if you had nvidia inside. What do you think about it ? Thanks for your kind answers

@giammarco_vignali the only conflict I have was that "Code 43" error, wich I fixed by runnig the "error 43 fixer". Every time I have a main update on Windows or nvidia driver I have to run this script, but thats ok because is its once every many months.

I even tested with all three GPUs enabled (intel HD Graphics, internal Geforce 930mx and my external, currently Geforce GTX 1060 3G) and works fine, but I dont like the changing between LCD and external monitor when I close or open the Lid, so i disable the other two GPUs so I can have always the external monitor signal no matter if a close or open the Lid.

Hello..nice setup I've got the same laptop with MX150 in-build and looking to plug in an external graphics card. Since it has an M2 B+M SSD port, can we use that instead of wifi card slot? Did you try something like this?
