Hi all,

We have Sql 2005 32 bit (both ent & std edition). We going to purchase Sql 2005 64 bit Std edition. Please can someone advise whether the licensing cost for 64 bit is higher than a 32 bit.

If so, can someone pls provide the approx licensing cost info for sql server 2005 (when using per processor licensing model).

Thanks a lot.

Warm Regards

Paul

Hi Dilip,

Here is the pricing for SQL Server 2005 http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/pricing.aspx. The is no difference in cost between 32-bit or 64-bit. But, remeber you can run 64-bit applications only on 64bit hardware so you might incur cost in buying additional hardware resources to meet your needs.

Let me know if you have qns.

Thanks

Thank you Sugesh,

Do we have to pay any extra amount for purchasing the x64 Sql Server Installation S/W. Can the same the same license key for x86 be used for the x64 also or should we need get a seperate license key from MS.

We have x86 installation media but do have the x64 version. We plan to download the same from MS site but have a doubt regarding the usage of license keys and we need raise any seperate purchase order.

In This case you need to get a new one, but still enquire with Customer Support. MS is too good sometimes they dont charge you extra if you agree to upgrade to other editions, versions, etc if you confirm that earlier version will never be used.

Thanks

Sugesh is correct.. Paul, we can give some basic info on licensing but when you need specific details, I would suggest the product licensing team is the best one to answer. You can get their details @ http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/product-activation.aspx . I don't think you can use X86 key to X64 version, but you can get a upgrade key based on your edition

Thanks Sugesh & Vidhya,

We have downloaded the x64 Sql Installation media using the Login credentials provided by MS. In this case, the same key appears to work fine. This saved us a lot of trouble as we had to get the server pepped up within 24hrs.

Thanks all for your speedy response. This groups is an excellent way to share knowledge. Yes, henceforth I would post all my tech queries on the portal for more visibility and greater reach.

Paul
