Good evening neighbors,

Please join MPD Chief Peter Newsham, Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, community leaders, and your neighbors for a discussion on MPD's proposed realignment of the 1st Police District. The meeting will be Tuesday, December 11th, at 7:00 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church at 6th and I NE.

Every 5 years, MPD takes a look at the boundaries of their police districts, and makes changes to ensure resources are spread evenly. For their 2019 realignment, they are proposing removing a portion of our immediate neighborhood and placing it under the 5th District, which encompasses Trinidad and Union Market on north to the MD/DC line. The area to be transferred out of the 1st District is bounded by North Cap to the west, I Street to the south, 9th Street to the east, and Florida Ave to the north. This portion of the neighborhood will be served by a new set of officers and commanders, while the current set of officers will still patrol south of I Street.

I've heard some of the following questions and concerns from neighbors:
  • Does it make sense to have the boundary between two police districts lie one block from a major commercial/residential/pedestrian corridor like H Street? What does that mean when a crime - like the recent Whole Foods shooting - takes place right on a District boundary?
  • What will the coordination be like between the two districts?
  • What does it mean for MPD's efforts to curb prostitution along K street and surrounding streets?
  • Many of MPD's districts are bounded by major thoroughfares (NY Ave, FL Ave, North Cap). Why small neighborhood streets like I Street and 9th?
  • How will this effect the level of patrols in our neighborhood when the same officers must patrol Trinidad and/or Union Market, which is slated to get thousands of additional residential units in the coming years?
This meeting is your opportunity to hear MPD's responses, and to raise your own concerns and comments. Hope to see you there. The attached document has more information and maps.

Thanks,

Good evening, neighbors.

A reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday, December 11th, at 7:00 p.m., Calvary Episcopal Church will be hosting a public meeting to discuss the pending realignment of a portion of our neighborhood from the 1st Police District to the 5th Police District. Come share your questions and concerns with MPD Chief Peter Newsham and other MPD officials, as well as with Councilmember Charles Allen, about what this means for the level of police service we receive in our neighborhood.

Please use the 6th Street entrance to the church. Hope to see you tomorrow night.
