Fellow Ward 6 Democrats,
June is going to be a busy month, with both the Ward 6 Dems and our
allied groups hosting multiple events. Check out the extensive listing
below, and mark your calendar accordingly, particularly for
our biennial convention, Saturday, June 22. We will
be voting on our 2019-2021 officers and on our new bylaws, revised for
the first time since 2003. Please review them at https://www.ward6dems.org/proposed_revision_to_bylaws
and come ready to say "Yea" or "Nay."
We'd like to welcome a new civic association in Ward 6, for the H
Street/NoMa neighborhoods. Founder Tiffany Aziz joined our last
officers' meeting and has invited the Ward 6 Dems in those
neighborhoods to be a part of her new organization. We're proud to
help her spread the word.
We're planning something fun and eye-catching for our presence in
the Barracks Row Independence Day parade, and we need some crafty
volunteers to help us prepare, so if that's you, see the information
below and plan to join us Monday night, June 17.
Do you have a tip for us, or a news item you think we should share
with the rest of the Ward 6 Democrats? Send it to our newsletter
editor, Elizabeth Engel, at ewe...@yahoo.com.

Your current Ward 6 Democrats officers have just completed a
thorough review of our bylaws, which was last performed in 2003. We
will be voting on the revised version at our biennial convention on
June 22, as well as electing the officers who will lead us for the
next two years.

Democrats from Ward 6, so please be prompt. Voting will remain open
until 1:00 p.m., and you are welcome to drop in at any time between
10:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to vote.
Please take a moment to review the revised bylaws at https://www.ward6dems.org/proposed_revision_to_bylaws and
plan to join us on at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22 in the community
hall at Christ Church (620 G Street SE) to accomplish this important
business of our organization. If you are driving, Christ Church
parking lot is accessed from the alley in rear of building.
51 for 51 Rally TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 21
Are you passionate about DC Statehood? Join the full compliment of
our local statehood organizations Tuesday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m. on the
east side of the Capitol building (between the Senate and the Supreme
Court) for a rally to draw attention to "51 for 51," their ongoing
efforts to ensure that DC's entrance as the 51st state will require
only 51 votes in the Senate.
If you have questions, contact Josh Burch at unitedfor...@gmail.com.
We hope to see you there.
Blue Is Bustin' Out All Over Fundraiser - Saturday, June
1
The Ward 6 Democrats are cordially invited to join
Indivisible Waterfront Saturday, June 1 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. for a
fundraiser to help turn Virginia blue and keep the Blue Wave
rolling.
In 2017, activists from Virginia and DC helped elect a surprising
number of Democrats to the Virginia General Assembly, almost (but not
quite) flipping both houses. This fall, we get another shot at turning
Virginia blue, which will require protecting our 2017 gains and
flipping a few more seats. All seats in both houses of the Virginia
General Assembly are up for election this November - that's 100 seats
in the House of Delegates, and 40 seats in the state Senate.
Join Indivisible Waterfront at Blue Is Bustin' Out All Over to
raise funds for and meet Virginia state candidates:
- Delegate Wendy Gooditis (D), VA-10
- Delegate Hala Ayala (D), VA-51
- Dan Helmer, the Democratic challenger in VA-40
Trump claims the blue wave will end in Virginia this November. As
reported in Politico
on March 29, "National Republicans say they intend to use the contests
as one measurement to gauge the President's strength in the state."
Let's help Wendy, Hala, and Dan prove him wrong.
Democrats stayed home in 2010, giving Republicans the majorities
they needed in a number of states to gerrymander themselves into a
decade in power. This fall's contests are particularly important
to guarantee a fair distribution of seats in Virginia in the
redistricting that will occur as a result of the 2020 census.
The June 1st event will take place in a spectacular outdoor space
in Southwest, and will feature music from "Saxation Without
Representation," refreshments, and an opportunity to meet the
candidates Indivisible Waterfront is supporting. Register by Friday,
May 24 at: https://volunteersignup.org/FC99B.
The party address will be sent once you register.
Calling All Crafty Dems - Monday June 17
The Ward 6 Democrats are planning to march in the Barracks Row
Independence Day parade. We'll be wearing white and sporting Votes For
Women sashes in honor of the centennial of the passage of the 19th
amendment. We've purchased plain sashes, and now we need crafty
volunteers to volunteer to join us Monday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m.
to decorate them. Making a sash (or two) does not commit you to
wearing it while marching with us (although you would of course be
welcome to join us). If you know your way around a glue gun, email
Marci Hilt at marc...@aol.com, and she'll get
you the location and other details.
We're also looking for at least one person, maybe more, who
knows how to ride a horse (yes, really), so if that's you and you're
available to join us the morning of July 4th, email Marci Hilt at marc...@aol.com.
NEW - H Street/NoMa Civic Association (HNCA)
Do you live in the H Street or NoMa neighborhoods of Ward 6? Did
you know that you have a brand-new civic association?
HNCA was founded this spring "to build and sustain a diverse
community, as well as educate and advocate on behalf of all
residents."
The civic association's goals are:
- To serve as a mechanism for communication and advocacy in the
neighborhood.
- To create an environment where all are welcome to contribute.
- To preserve and enhance the physical and aesthetic environment
within the neighborhood.
- To promote a safe pedestrian environment in the neighborhood.
- To decrease crime in the neighborhood.
- To encourage participation in neighborhood activities.
HNCA meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Walker
Jones Education Campus, 1125 New Jersey Avenue NW (enter from the
Pierce Street NW side). The next meeting will take place Tuesday, June
11, and all neighborhood residents are invited to attend. To RSVP or
if you have questions about HNCA, email noma...@gmail.com.

Save the Date - Virginia Elections GOTV kick off - Tuesday, June
11
Your Ward 6 Dems are dedicated to ensuring that we don't *almost*
flip the Virginia state legislature blue like we did in 2017 - this
year, we are going to do it. We will be holding out GOTV (Get Out the
Vote) kickoff the evening of Tuesday, June 11, which is the night of
the Virginia state primary, starting at 7:00 p.m. when the polls
close. Details to follow shortly. If you know you want to help,
whether with writing postcards to voters, calling/texting out the
vote, or canvassing for particular candidates, email Andria Thomas,
our GOTV lead, at andria...@gmail.com.
Save the Date for the Next Ward 6 Matters Panel - Thursday, June
13
We have a date and time for our next Ward 6 Matters panel
discussion. Is Justice Equal for All Neighbors? will
take place Thursday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Action
Group's Hal J. Gordon Building (124 15th Street SE). We're still
finalizing our panelists and registration is not yet open, but you
will not want to miss this important conversation on policy, reform,
and enforcement that will examine the relationship between justice and
community.
The Ward 6 Democrats do not charge a membership fee, and we’re
entirely volunteer run, but efforts like producing this newsletter,
hosting our website, writing postcards to voters in Virginia,
providing noshes at our happy hours, and advertising the Ward 6
Matters panels require funds. Monthly donations – even small ones of
$5 or $10 a month – are the most helpful for us, because we can then
plan expenditures knowing how much money we have coming in. Please donate
today to help us achieve our mission of encouraging political
activity among Democrats in Ward 6, improving the quality of life in
our community, and building the party.
Paid for by Ward 6 Democrats, P.O. Box 15634,
Washington, DC 20003, Marci Hilt, Treasurer. Copies of our financial
reports are on file with the Office of Campaign Finance. Contributions
are not tax deductible for federal or District of Columbia income tax
purposes.
