Moreover, displaying subtasks on the Asana timeline helps with tracking deadlines and keeping the team on track. Additionally, it provides an overview of the entire timeline that is easy to understand for all stakeholders involved in the project.
Furthermore, this feature also allows users to assign clear responsibilities for each task within a project. By being able to clearly see what subtasks are outstanding or completed at any point during the project timeline, everyone can stay informed about their tasks. This quality control helps catch errors or missed steps earlier in the process.
One notable success story was from a small company where adding subtasks onto their Asana timeline increased accountability among employees and allowed for easier tracking of where delays were happening in projects. The end result was completing projects much faster than before while still keeping up quality work standards.
By displaying subtasks on the Asana timeline, there is an undoubted increase in work efficiency and output. The streamlining of each component of a task creates a clear accountability structure that eliminates confusion and reduces errors.
Having visible subtasks on the timeline ensures that small milestones can be achieved quicker, creating a sense of accomplishment and eagerness to move onto the next stage. As a result, it leads to greater productivity.
Are there any updates on this? Our team runs multiple customer projects simultaneously and this expanded view is not only overwhelming but it also hurts the experience. Since the projects populate as you scroll it makes it almost impossible to jump right into editing a timeline - everything keeps jumping around.
Thank goodness for this tip! I have been tearing my hair out trying to work out how to view the timeline on my iPad Pro. I needed to take a client through a timeline and I did not have my laptop with me. I agree with the comments here. This built in timeline feature is one of the main reasons we switched to Asana in the first place. So it seems mad that it is not in the App.
Yes i see the need of implement it in iphone too, iphone users need the same workflow in movil that in pc, i agree that the absence of timeline in IOS makes me wait until i am on PC to make change to my timelines, i hope someone we have this feature on IOS/android
The browsers on iPad used to open the Asana webapp with the timeline but they start now automatically Asana app without timeline, so one actually has to delete the app from the iPad to access the webapp with the timeline. I agree, this must improve, it is a major shortcoming for the money.
I use the timeline view quite a bit and the gantt view is NOT helpful. Can you please add a feature where we could deactivate the gantt view, please? As the previous entries mentioned, it is a lot of scrolling and very hard to navigate for my purposes. Thank you!
yes pleeeeaaassee! Especially since the calendar view does not give you the option to automatically show all of the tasks; you have to manually open each row of the calendar. The calendar view over-collapses and the timeline view over-expands. Both of these should be fixable!
Depending on your type of business, you and your team may need to export Asana data of different types to convey information on several topics, such as conversations, timelines, and milestones. The good news is that Asana gives you the ability to export many of these through several simple steps. Even better, you can export this data automatically with Coupler.io.
Asana timeline is a condensed organizational view of your tasks between their start and end dates. It gives you a visual way of managing your projects so that you can control the order in which you handle your work activities. It also gives you click-and-drag abilities to quickly create and edit your project.
In Asana, you can set the goals of your team and create a timeline to achieve those goals. When you manage your work in Asana, you have the freedom to organize your projects in a way that is best for you and your team. This helps your team to focus on the most important tasks with less effort.
In the image, people have been assigned different tasks and for each task, a tentative time period has been determined. The tasks assigned have been divided into various departments. The arrows in the image describe the flow of the timeline and dependencies which makes it easier to understand the workflow and helps in avoiding future conflicts or confusion.
Exactly the same for me. When I create an overview of project timelines, the timeline puts each task/subtask into a separate row which makes the timeline view useless with the number of tasks in hundreds. I need to manually adjust each timeline by drag-n-dropping all into a single line per project. Dear Asana, @Marie is there a way/tool to automate or at least control how timeline items are organised, please?
One of the biggest advantages of Timeline view is that it allows you to easily visualize those task dependencies. Dependencies will appear on your timeline as a line connecting the two tasks. You can create a dependency in Asana in just a few simple steps:
In Asana Timeline view, you can highlight the critical path by clicking on the icon with three dots, then toggling on Highlight critical path. The critical path will then appear yellow on your timeline.
Seeing your project as a timeline is incredibly helpful for understanding how the pieces of your project fit together. Use it tandem with Clockwise to schedule Asana tasks directly on your calendar for a productivity boost.
My team recently upgraded to Premium and we are loving the Timeline feature! However many of us primarily use Asana on our phones and are having trouble viewing the timelines for projects - the mobile app still only presents list, board, and calendar viewing options even after logging out and back in.
Asana, please please please allow the Timeline view on Ipad!!! Love your software but this is a huge miss. I really would love to be able to use the timeline view on my ipad. I live off my ipad and want to use the timeline view constantly
Hi Guys, I love the new timeline feature. I would like to create a master timeline showing the work being done across projects. I am thinking of sharing tasks across projects and then, having the timeline in a master project reflect the overall picture. Is there is simpler way to do that? Looking for a company-level view of all initiatives without having to drill-down in each project.
@Marie One more question. Suppose that I have many projects, each with tons of tasks. How could I carry over a single task representing the planned start and completion of each project on that master project/timeline? That way, I would see where each project fits without seeing all the details. I am trying to avoid having to convert tasks into subtasks. Thoughts?
From what I read (and found so far) this thread also regards my case: I want to visualize the progress of a (very) large project. I do have it aggregated in one project but am unsatisfied by the available timeline feature:
-zoom factor cannot become small enough to show the whole project curation
-I cannot filter projects to determine the level of detail the overview gives
When in list view I have a series of tasks in order by date starting with earliest due date and ending with latest. When I look at the same project in timeline view, the tasks show up in a random order.
Not all staff have email addresses. It would help us to create a form of allocation without email addresses. I know we could do this with fields but the staff allocation does not show up in the timeline.
Agreed! At the very least pull over the section headers from the list tab to create the swim lanes! I just got through setting up a list project with sections, and without the sections transferring over timeline looks a shade (pun intended) lost.
This is such a massive step forward for timeline, if the two items above can be remedied in some way, our team will be using timelines far more than just viewing it as a gantt chart.
Hi @abass and thank you so much for your warm feedback! Unfortunately, it is not possible yet to filter your Timeline by tasks completion or custom fields, but this is definitely something on our radar. In the meantime, I would suggest to add your vote to Sorting / Filter options in timeline.
Have just purchased the Premium version and had expected to the ability to export a pictorial view of timeline view. Surely this is basic functionality ? Adding it will not break anything so what is the problem. Please can this be added asap. Thanks
I really need this too for my client. They have multiple projects and need to see a visual timeline that can be exported. They do not want to use Instagantt. This facility should be available in Asana!
WOW only 9 votes. For all of the 399 people who want subtasks to break out in their timeline they sure should want to have a lot more control over the timeline view. I see this being one of the bigger handicaps in managing big projects over long periods of time. A lot of great suggestions above. We do need to have more control over the view. Thank you Asana team for having a place for us to suggest our hearts desires.
Until this release, we have been able to minimize the height of the timeline view by horizontally stacking planned tasks, so that one task begins where the previous one ended, within the same section, on the same row.

It seems like our timeline is currently not working as intended, at least in comparison to the screenshot in your original post here. This is a screenshot of how a task is currently displayed on our timeline.
I think most teams would prefer a vertically compact timeline by default.
This change is currently causing a visual mess and unnecessary scrolling without any option for us to even manually solve it with a workaround.
