The Indian tricolour was spotted among a sea of American flags during Wednesday's Capitol Hill attack. The chaos unfolded as thousands of supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump swarmed the Capitol Hill in Washington DC, bypassing security. The protesters ransacked offices, flipped tables, smashed windows and looted the building.
One video taken at the scene shows an unidentified person waving an Indian flag waving alongside dozens of red and blue ones. While some protesters held up the American star-spangled banner, others waved blue flags proclaiming Trump 2024. The lone Indian tricolour stood out in contrast in this video shared by journalist Alejandro Alvarez.
BJP MP Varun Gandhi also took to the microblogging platform to wonder how the Indian flag appeared at the Capitol. "Why is there an Indian flag there??? This is one fight we definitely don't need to participate in..." he wrote.
A number of Indian American men were present at the riots, and the Indian flag was spotted in various photographs and video that emerged from that day. In one video shared by WTOP editor Alejandro Alvarez, the flag is clearly visible on the bottom left corner:

Legendary cricketer Shahid Afridi has confirmed on live television that his daughter 'was waving the Indian flag' during India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 clash at the Dubai International Stadium on September 4. Speaking on Samaa TV, the former Pakistan captain revealed that there was a shortage of Pakistan flags at the venue, so his daughter had to wave India's flag during the game. "My wife told me that there were barely 10% Pakistani fans in the stadium and the rest were Indian fans. Pakistani flags were not available there so my younger daughter was waving the Indian flag. I received the video, but I was unsure about whether to share it online or not", he said.
Commenting on the presence of the Indian flag at the attack, people pointed out on social media that the mob that stormed the Capitol while members of the Congress were going through the process of counting and certifying electoral college votes also included Indian-American supporters of Trump.
One Twitter user pointed out the contrast between seeing the Indian flag at a protest against a democratic election outcome with how India had defied saluting Adolf Hitler during the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
"We have to bring a total change in this country," the 74-year-old told a huge crowd of chanting, flag-waving supporters at the open Delhi venue for his 15-day hunger strike to demand stronger laws against official graft.
At times, his open-top truck was forced to stop as the crowds surged forward to throw flowered garlands up at Hazare, who was protected from driving monsoon rains by a large, camouflage-patterned parasol.
