Nová návštěva u milosrdného Samařana Církev vždy drželi pohromadě bezmocní. Nedávno jsem objevil nový způsob, jak číst příběh o milosrdném Samařanovi. Vždycky jsem měl za to, že milosrdný Samařan je symbolem Krista – a jistě je to jeden způsob, jak tomu podobenství rozumět. Ale viděno z jiného úhlu, skutečným symbolem Krista může být muž ležící u cesty. Muž, který leží u silnice, je tím, kdo působí celou konverzi. Je tím, kdo iniciuje celé to nové počínání, kdo pozvedá tvou hlavu, potřásá jí a obrací vzhůru nohama, dává ji zpět a říká: „Tak tohle je ta realita.“ Věci, s nimiž nemůžeme nic počít (neužitečnosti), a věci, s kterými nic nenaděláme (nezbytnosti), jsou vždy věcmi, jež nás propojují s Realitou. Ale my bychom raději byli katolíky; my Boží království nechceme! Raději bychom byli jen Američany – my ve skutečnosti nechceme být globálními, univerzálními lidmi! Raději bychom hájili své hranice zde –nejsme naladěni na ty velké hranice, ke kterým nás volá Ježíš. To bychom se museli uprázdnit příliš a vytvořit prostor pro ne-já, pro druhého – pro nepřítele. Nedovedeme a nechceme se učit – dokonce do té míry, že jdeme do války proti Iráku. Je to, jako kdybychom nemohli bez nepřítele žít, jako kdyby Amerika nevěděla, kdo je, dokud tu nemá někoho, proti němuž by soustředila svou energii. Studená válka skončila a my jsme si vytvořili „horkou“, protože nějakou potřebujeme. Stali jsme se militaristickým národem, který bez negativní energie nemůže žít, který nemůže žít v království míru, jež Ježíš ohlašuje, protože cenou, kterou se platí za mír, je nevládnutí. Cenou za mír je spravedlnost. Cenou za mír je pravda. A jsou to právě ti opuštění u cesty, kteří nás tomu učí.

The Good Samaritan Revisited It’s always the powerless one who gathers the community, the Church. I recently discovered a new way to read the story of the Good Samaritan. I had always assumed that the Good Samaritan was the Christ symbol – and that’s certainly one way to understand the parable. But from another point of view the real Christ symbol is the man lying on the side of the road. The man lying on the side of the road is the one doing all the converting. He is the one who forces a whole new agenda, who takes your head off, shakes it and turns it upside down, puts it back on and says, This is what reality means. The things we can’t do anything with (the useless) and the things we can’t do anything about (the necessary) are always the things that connect us to the Real. We’d sooner just be Catholics; we don’t want the Kingdom! We’d sooner just be Americans – we don’t really want to be a global, universal people! We’d rather protect our boundaries here – we’re not ready for the big boundaries that Jesus calls us to. I’d have to empty too much of myself and make space for the not me, the other, the enemy. We cannot and will not learn – even to the point of going to war against Iraq. It’s as if we cannot live without an enemy, as if America does not know who it is unless it has someone to focus its energy against. The Cold War is over, and we created a hot one because we needed one.' We have become a militaristic people who cannot live without negative energy, who cannot live in the realm of peace that Jesus announces, because the price of peace is nondomination. The price of peace is justice. The price of peace is truth. And it is the people left for dead on the side of the road who teach us that. from Kingdom Spirituality Is Global Spirituality
