Milosti těla Až teprve teď, dva tisíce let od zjevení tajemství Kristova, se odvažujeme věřit tomu, co Satan zjistil při ukřižování. Ďábel ví, že příhodným místem, kde nás napadnout, je oblast, za niž se nejvíce stydíme, kde jsme nejslabší a vpravdě „bezcharakterní“, totiž naše tělesnost. Satan ví, že toto je to poslední místo, kde bychom očekávali nebo hledali Boha. A Bůh ví, že pouze hříšníci, kterým bylo odpuštěno, a pak duchovně hledající tam Boha najdou. A tak zlo nalezlo puklinu v hradbách a napadlo každého z nás právě tam, kde „mi byl dán do těla osten, posel satanův“ (2 K 12,7). Bohužel to fungovalo! Většina křesťanské tradice je negativně a bezúčelně lapena do pocitu viny a zaměstnávání se tělem, zatímco veliké problémy spravedlnosti, evangelia a milosti míjely bez povšimnutí. Výsledkem byla strnulost a represe – namnoze se tomu říkalo „svatost“. Taková odpověď byla největším triumfem Zlého nad evangeliem svobody. Pozitivní síla lidské afektivity byla lapena do strašlivé pasti. Ale Kristus bude mít svou sklizeň. Nastane prostřednictvím slabého těla, onoho v této věci nejméně „podezřelého“ místa, kde se projeví zdraví a růst.

Graces of the Flesh We are only now daring to believe, after two thousand years of revelation of the mystery of Christ, what Satan discovered at the crucifixion. The Evil One knows that the place to attack us is in the area where we are most subject to shame, where we are most weak and truly “out of character”: our bodiliness. Satan knows that is the last place where we will expect or look for God. And God knows that only forgiven sinners and spiritual searchers will find God there. So evil has found the breach in the wall and attacked each one of us there with “a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan” (2 Corinthians 12:7). Unfortunately, it worked! Much of Christian tradition has been negatively and uselessly trapped in guilt and preoccupation with the body, while the great issues of justice, gospel and grace have gone unheeded. The result has been rigidity and repression – much of it called “holiness.” This response has been Evil’s greatest triumph over gospel freedom. It has horribly entrapped the positive power of human affection. Christ will have his harvest, though. It will be through weak flesh, that least-suspected place, that health and growth will be revealed. from Sojourners, “Pure Passion”
