Hlásejte evangelium V některých částech Střední Ameriky a Asie je v církvi neuvěřitelná vitalita. Kolem víry je tam takový rozruch, že jsem tam chtěl rovnou zůstat. Když jsem řekl: „Možná bych tu mohl žít,“ lidé mi bez výjimky říkali: „Ne, ne, vrať se do Ameriky, ta se musí obrátit a skutečně poznat evangelium. My tě tady ve Střední Americe nepotřebujeme,“ říkali v žertu. „My to tu bez tolika kněží zvládáme ve skutečnosti lépe. Ty jdi zpátky a hlásej evangelium v Severní Americe.“ My jsme první svět. Jsme lid, kterému bylo v mnoha směrech nesmírně přáno. A není důvodu cítit kvůli tomu nějakou vinu. Vytváříme velkou církev střední vrstvy a mentalitu, která je s tím spjata, je třeba razantně oslovit evangeliem. Naše Centrum v Novém Mexiku si právě toto vzalo za svůj úkol. Dokud nebude církev střední vrstvy nahlížet život ze strany Ježíšovy (totiž zdola), pak bude většina světa i nadále žít de facto v našem otroctví, podporujícím náš životní styl i naše iluze.

Announce the Gospel There is an unbelievable vitality in the Church in parts of Central America and Asia. There’s such excitement about faith that I felt like staying there when I visited. When I said, “Maybe I should stay here,” people, without exception, said, “No, go back to America. It’s America that has to be converted and really recognize the gospel.” “We don’t need you down here in Central America,” as they’d jokingly say. “We’re actually doing better without so many priests. You go back and preach the gospel in North America.” We’re First World. We are a people who have been graced unbelievably on many levels. And there’s no point in feeling guilty about that, but ours is the large middle-class Church, and the mentality that goes with that must be challenged by the gospel. Our center in New Mexico has taken this as its task. Until the middle-class Church sees life from the Jesus side (the underside), much of the world will continue to live as our de facto slaves, subsidizing our life-style and our illusions. from Letting Go: A Spirituality of Subtraction
