Průlom Jako katoličtí křesťané v Americe musíme navázat spojení se všemi kulturami, se všemi bratry a sestrami, kteří s námi sdílejí chléb a kalich. Musíme se ptát: „V jakém smyslu jsou bratry a sestrami? Jsme opravdu lidem Božího království? Anebo jsme nakonec jen americkým lidem?“ Myslím, že v tomto století mají katolíci tu největší možnost učinit takto radikální krok. Katolická církev je mezinárodní instituce. Naši bratři a sestry z jiných zemí nám stále napovídají, že svět je větší. Myslím, že směřujeme ke svému obrácení. Okružní listy amerických biskupů o míru a ekonomické spravedlnosti nám skýtají naději. Papežovy sociální encykliky jsou ve svém záběru skutečně globální. Ano, otevírají se nám oči. Zjišťujeme, že právě my, Severoameričané, jsme možná ti nejméně vysvobození, a tedy pro takové vysvobození nejvíce připravení. My, kteří jsme největší slepci, myslíme si, že žádné vysvobození nepotřebujeme. Myslíme si, že veškerou pravdu nám předkládá Time a Newsweek, a s takovým viděním světa jsme spokojeni. Globálnímu přístupu amerických katolíků je tak souzeno, aby se stal globální zodpovědností.

Breakthrough As Catholic Christians in America, we’ve got to make connections with all cultures, with all our brothers and sisters who share the bread and the cup with us. We must ask, How are they brothers and sisters? Are we really Kingdom people? Or, after all is said and done, are we only American people? In this century, I think, Catholics have the greatest chance to make this breakthrough. The Catholic Church is an international institution. Our brothers and sisters from other countries keep telling us there’s a bigger world. I think we’re going to get converted. The U.S. bishops’ pastorals on peace and on economic justice give us hope. The pope’s social encyclicals are truly global in scope. Yes, our eyes are opening. We’re discovering that we North Americans just might be the most unliberated, and therefore the most ready for liberation. We who have the greatest blindness think we don’t need liberation. We think Time and Newsweek tell us the whole truth, and we are content with that worldview. We rqust fight that blindness with vision. The global access of American Catholics is fated to become global responsibility. from Letting Go: A Spirituality of Subtraction
