„Totost“ věcí Celým svým srdcem věřím, že stvoření je již vykoupení. To je dobrá teologie knihy Genesis a dobrá teologie františkánská. Již v aktu stvoření ti Bůh dal jméno. Tvoje „tvojnost“ je vepsána do samého jádra tvé bytosti. Františkánský filosof Duns Scotus to nazval „totost“ (v latině haecceitas) věcí. Řekl, že Bůh stvořil pouze individua, nikoli rody (genus) a druhy (species) – druh. Bůh stvořil tebe jako tebe, v tvé jedinečné „totosti“. V duchovním životě jde o to, aby ses stával tím, kým vpravdě jsi. Nejde o to, stát se Kateřinou Sienskou nebo jiným svatým, ale tím, kým jsi. Zní to dost snadno, ale být tím, kým opravdu jsi, vyžaduje práci, odvahu a víru. Se zbožnými lidmi se v jistém smyslu pracuje velice obtížně – jsou tak závislí na různých soudech, že nejsou schopni nechat realitu být. Snad proto Ježíš říkal, abychom nesoudili. Pokud jde o to, abychom nechali stvoření, přírodu, zemi – vše, co je – k sobě promlouvat, musíme se mnohé učit ze spirituality stvoření, ze spirituality amerických Indiánů a z františkánské spirituality. My, lidé náboženští, přicházíme se svými předem hotovými závěry, biblickými citáty a dogmaty, a to tak, abychom nemuseli přijímat realitu, přijímat okamžik tak, jak je. Z nějakého důvodu je snazší zastávat názory, než prostě být bdělý a probuzený.

The ‘This-ness’ of Things I believe with all my heart that creation is already redemption. That’s good Genesis theology, that’s good Franciscan theology. Already in the act of creation, God has named you. Your “you-ness” is written in the core of your being. The Franciscan philosopher Duns Scotus called it the “this-ness” (haecceity, in Latin) of things. He said that God only created individuals, not genus and species. God created you as you, in your unique “this-ness.” Spiritual life is a matter of becoming who you truly are. It’s not becoming Catherine of Siena, or some other saint, but who you are. It sounds easy enough, but being who you truly are is work, courage and faith. In some ways religious people are the hardest people to work with – they’re so addicted to judgments that they can’t let reality be. Maybe that’s why Jesus said not to judge. We’ve got a lot to learn from creation spirituality, Native American spirituality and Franciscan spirituality, in terms of letting creation, nature, earth – what is – speak to us. We religious people come on with our predetermined conclusions, Bible quotes and dogmas – all so that we don’t have to receive reality, receive the moment as it is.
