Vyhlížíme v temnotách Věřící lid v Bibli slýchal slovo Boží právě tak, jak je musíme slyšet vy i já. Snad ani neslyšeli slyšitelné hlasy, třeba neměli více vidění než vy nebo já. Ale o Božím volání nějak věděli. Přijímali slovo Boží. Zakoušeli a přijímali Boží dary. A jen zřídka o svém daru pochybovali. Pro židovský národ byla historie vždy dobou mezi příslibem a naplněním. Věřícím byl ten, kdo vyhlížel v temnotách – v prázdnotě – a věděl, že nějak, nějakým způsobem se slovo Páně naplní – i přes všechnu absurditu a marnost.

Outstaring the Darkness The faith-filled people in the Bible heard the word of God just as you and I must hear it. Perhaps they didn’t hear audible voices, ,perhaps they didn’t see visions any more than you and I do. But somehow they knew the call of God. They received the word of God. They experienced and received the gifts of God. And they rarely doubted their gift. For the Hebrew people, history was always the time between promise and fulfillment. The faithful one was the one who outstared the darkness – the void – and knew that somehow, some way, out of all of this absurdity and aimlessness, the word of the Lord would be fulfilled. from The Great Themes of Scripture
