Dar viny Stupně 4, 5 a 6 z Dvanácti stupňů: 4. Odvážně jsme prováděli morální inventuru sebe sama. 5. Připouštěli jsme exaktní povahu svých pochybení vůči Bohu, sobě samým i jiným lidským bytostem. 6. Byli jsme zcela připraveni k tomu nechat Boha, aby všechny tyto charakterové vady odstranil. Příběh ženy přistižené při cizoložství je dokonalým příkladem, jak Ježíš dává lidem „dar viny“. To je ovšem něco, co by naše dnešní rafinovaná liberální společnost vůbec nepovažovala za možné ani žádoucí. Řekl jí dvě věci: 1. „Neodsuzuji tě“ (odpovědí není hanba) a 2. „Jdi a už nehřeš“ (převezmi vládu nad sebou a změň se). Tím jí dává stejnou lekci, jakou jsou stupně 4, 5 a 6 programu Dvanáct stupňů: být zcela připraveni nechat Boha, aby odstranil všechny vady charakteru, to znamená přivlastnit si tyto charakterové vady. Nějak v sobě musíme nalézt svobodu a ochotu to udělat. Svět nás učí odmítání, racionalizaci a obviňování. Ale Ježíš dává dar viny (její vlastnění a zodpovědnost za ni), přičemž odnímá hanbu. Hanba je docela jednoduše strach z opovržení druhými. Všichni ho v sobě máme. Bojíme se, že na nás budou hledět svrchu. Obáváme se, že budeme považováni za nicotné. Bojíme se, že nás budou nenávidět za to, kdo jsme. Ježíš nikdy lidi nezostuzoval. Naopak je povzbuzoval, aby převzali plnou zodpovědnost za své chyby. To je ta úzká a zdravá cesta, kterou otevírá evangelium i programy Dvanácti stupňů.

The Gift of Guilt Steps 4, 5 and 6 of The Twelve Steps: [We] 4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. 6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. The story of the woman caught in adultery is a perfect example of Jesus giving people the “gift of guilt,” something our sophisticated, liberal society would not imagine possible or desirable. He said two things to her: (1) “I da not condemn you” (shame is not the answer) and (2) “Go and sin no more” (take ownership of yourself and change). In this he teaches the same lesson as steps 4 and 5 and 6 of the Twelve-Step program. Be entirely ready to have God remove all of these defects of character, which means we’ve got to own all those defects of character. We’ve somehow got to find the freedom and the readiness to want to do this. The world teaches us denial, rationalization and blame. But Jesus gives the gift of guilt (ownership and responsibility), while taking away shame. Shame is quite simply fear of the contempt of others. We all carry it. We’re afraid of being looked down upon. We’re afraid of being thought of as nothing. We’re afraid of being hated for who we are. Jesus never shamed people. But he did encourage them to take full responsibility for their mistakes.
