Víra požaduje víru (Zaznamenáno v Lurdech.) Víra nikdy nebude ničím jiným než vírou a nikdy to nebude snadné. Jsem si jist, že mnoho lidí přichází do Lurd s tím, že si myslí, že sama přítomnost bude tak silná, že víry už ani nebude zapotřebí. Tak tomu nikdy nebude. Dívenka Bernadetta, která sama viděla Marii, žila životem neuvěřitelné víry. Jí Maria řekla: „Bernadetto, ty nikdy nebudeš na této zemi šťastná. Ale slibuji ti štěstí navěky v nebi.“ Vidíme tu lidi, kteří jsou nepředstavitelně tělesně postižení, jak se na vozíku dopravili k jeskynní svatyni. Naše srdce svírá bolest, a my sami jsme tak šťastni, že máme tělo, které nám dovoluje pohybovat se a chodit. Po požehnání nemocných a ponoření do vody jsme nuceni si položit otázku: „A proč nejsou uzdraveni?“ A jestliže vy i já se takto ptáme, představte si, jak se asi ptají oni. A přece: dokážete uvěřit té radosti, ačkoli musí být zabarvena zklamáním, kterou na jejich tvářích tak často vidíme? Lurdský zázrak je zázrakem víry. Je to zázrak, který není okamžitě viditelný. Ne vždy jsou lidé uzdraveni. A přece musíme uvěřit, že se tu děje něco životodárného, a to je dílo Boží. Bůh tvoří na zemi život. Držte se toho. Děje se to tisícerým různým způsobem a těmi nejdůležitějšími jsou ty, které se odehrávají v srdci. Jestliže po příchodu na toto místo obklopené svatostí, modlitbou a vírou vidíme lidi, kteří jsou hlouběji schopni vstupovat do tajemství, jsou snadněji schopni říci ano, smát se, důvěřovat, pak je to zázrak víry. Ale pořád je to víra. Pro některé z vás je úkonem víry uvěřit, proč tito lidé nejsou uzdraveni. Pro nás je to většinou obtížnější, než se to jeví jim.

Faith Requires Faith (Recorded at Lourdes) Faith is never going to be anything other than faith, and it’s never going to be easy. I’m sure many people come to Lourdes thinking that the presence will be so obvious that faith will be unnecessary. That will never be the case. Bernadette, this little girl who herself saw Mary, lived a life of unbelievable faith. Mary told her, “Bernadette, you’re never going to be happy on this earth. But I promise you happiness forever in heaven.” We see people, unbelievably crippled on the exterior, being wheeled up to the shrine, into the grotto. Our hearts ache for them, and we feel so lucky to have bodies that allow us to walk around. We are forced to ask the question after the blessing with the sick, after the dipping in the water, Well, why aren’t they healed? And if you and I are asking that, imagine how they are asking that. And yet, can you believe the joy, although it must be tinged with disappointment, that we see on so many of their faces? The miracle of Lourdes is a miracle of faith. It’s a miracle that is not immediately visible: People are not always healed. And yet we have to believe something deeply life-giving is happening here, and that’s God’s work. God is creating life on earth. Just hold on to that. It happens in a thousand different ways, and the most important ways are in the heart. If, by coming to this place surrounded by holiness, prayer and faith, we see people who are more deeply able to enter into the mystery, more easily able to say yes, to smile, to trust – that is the miracle of faith. But it is still faith. For some of you the act of faith here is to believe why these people aren’t healed.
