Inkulturace Myslím si, že číselné údaje o katolicismu, jeho institucích a tradicích vytvářely někdy falešný pocit moci. Myslíme si, že když dosahujeme takových čísel, ovlivňujeme kulturu. Někdy to ale tak vůbec není; pouze kulturu reflektujeme. Je velký rozdíl mezi ovlivňováním kultury a její reflexí. V mnoha případech má církev sklon reflektovat místní předsudky a jednostrannosti daleko více, než je ovlivňuje a mění. Máme za to, že když je nás tolik, máme velký vliv, vytváříme něco odlišného. Ale je tomu tak? Outsideři, sociální vyděděnci, menšiny a imigranti snáze chrání své hranice a svou vlastní identitu – a vedou dialog s kulturou z této jasné pozice. Slýchávám, že katolická lobby a hlas katolíků byly kdysi síla, s níž se muselo počítat. Nyní jsme to přivedli k vrcholu a přitom povětšinou odrážíme předsudky stranicky věrných politiků. Katolické ghetto bývalo lepší než tohle!

Inculturation I think Catholicism’s numbers, its institutions and traditions, have sometimes given it a false sense of power. We think that just because we have the numbers we’re influencing culture. Sometimes we’re not at all; we’re just refiecting the culture. There’s a big difference between influencing culture and reflecting it. In many cases the Church tends to reflect the local prejudices and biases much more than influence and change them. We think there are so many of us that we’re having a great effect here, that we’re really making a difference. But are we'? Outsiders, underdogs, minorities and immigrants have an easier time protecting boundaries and their own identity – and dialoguing with a culture from that clear position. The Catholic lobby or vote was once a force to be reckoned with, I’m told. Now we have made it to the top and largely mirror the prejudices of party-line politicians.
