Pamatuj si všechno Odlož, Jeruzaléme, roucho smutku a trápení a navěky se oblékni důstojností slávy od Boha. Přioděj se pláštěm spravedlnosti od Boha, vlož si na hlavu čelenku slávy Věčného. Neboť Bůh ukáže tvou nádheru všemu pod nebem. Navěky budeš od Boha nazýván „Pokoj spravedlnosti a sláva bohabojnosti“. Vzchop se, Jeruzaléme, postav se na výšině, ohlédni se na východ a pohleď na své děti shromážděné slovem Svatého. Od slunce západu až po jeho východ, jak se radují, že Bůh se na ně rozpomněl. (Bár 5,1–5) Naše rozpomenutí, že Bůh na nás pamatuje, je cestou k budoucnosti, přímou stezkou Páně, kterou sliboval Jan Křtitel (Lk 3,4). Paměť je základem jak bolesti, tak radosti. Nemůžeme mít jedno bez druhého. Neukvapujte se s uzdravováním všech vzpomínek, aniž je hluboce procítíte a zahrnete do své historie spásy. Bůh nás vyzývá, abychom celou realitu protrpěli, abychom podrželi v paměti dobré společně se zlým. Snad toto je i smysl cesty za novým pohledem a novou nadějí. Paměť vytváří naši připravenost ke spáse, vyprázdněnost k přijetí lásky a plnost radosti z ní. Pamatovat si zranění, selhání a odmítnutí se kupodivu zdá daleko snazší. Ve zdánlivé lásce ke svobodě nám Bůh umožnil být velice zranitelnými zlem. A dokud se nenaučíme vidět, zlo k nám snadno bude přistupovat a svírat nás ve své moci. Nicméně právě jen se zkušeností dobra, uchovanou v paměti, budeme mít dostatek sil vzdorovat smrti. Tak Báruch praví Jeruzalému: „Musíš se radovat, že Bůh se na tebe rozpomněl.“ V takové upomínce se nám dostává nového pohledu a zlo může být absorbováno a zahlazeno.

Remember Everything Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God forever: Wrapped in the cloak of justice from God, bear on your head the mitre that displays the glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth your splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship. Up Jerusalem! stand upon the heights; look to the east and see your children Gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by God. (Baruch 5:1-5, NAB) Our remembrance that God remembers us will be the highway into the future, the straight path of the Lord promised by John the Baptizer (Luke 3:4). Memory is the basis of both pain and rejoicing: We cannot have one without the other. Do not be too quick to heal all of those memories, unless that means also feehng them deeply and taking them all into your salvation history. God calls us to suffer the whole of reality, to remember the good along with the bad. Perhaps that is the .rse of the journey toward new sight and new hope. Memory creates a readiness for salvation, an emptiness to receive love and a fullness to enjoy it. Strangely enough, it seems so much easier to remember the hurts, the failures and the rejections. In a seeming love of freedom God has allowed us to be very vulnerable to evil. And until we have learned how to see, evil comes to us easily and holds us in its grasp. Yet only in an experience and a remembering of the good do we have the power to stand against death. As Baruch tells Jerusalem, you must “rejoice that you are remembered by God.” In that remembrance we have new sight, and the evil can be absorbed and blotted out. from Sojourners, “The Energy of Promise”
