Irská moudrost Když jsem jednou vedl exercicie v Irsku, přišly pak za mnou tři starší ženy a říkaly: „Otče, to, co jste nám říkal, je to, v co jsme věřily už před léty, ale zavrhly jsme to s 2. vatikánským koncilem.“ Vyprávěly mi o jednom padlém knězi. Byl to kněz, který se dopustil nějakého hrozného morálního poklesku – jako kdybychom se my všichni něčeho takového nedopouštěli! Na padlého kněze se přirozeně hledělo svrchu, a uklidili ho do nějakého kláštera na irském pobřeží, aby si dobří Irové už nepředstavovali, jak jejich kněz hřešil či pil. Nicméně ty tři dámy mi vzrušeně řekly: „A víte co? My ani nevíme, jestli to ti kněží věděli, ale my staří Irové jsme vždycky chodili za těmi padlými pro duchovní útěchu.“ V tom je ta irská moudrost.

He was the priest who’d had some terrible moral failure, as if all of us didn’t. The fallen priest was, of course, looked down upon and whisked away to some monastery on the coast of Ireland so the good Irish people wouldn’t imagine that their priest sinned or drank. Yet the three women told me, excitedly, “You know what?
