Ježíš zachraňuje Petr a Jan šli o třetí hodině do chrámu k odpolední modlitbě. Právě tam přinášeli nějakého člověka, chromého od narození; každý den ho posadili u chrámové brány, které se říká Krásná, aby prosil o almužnu ty, kdo tam vcházeli. Když viděl přicházet do chrámu Petra a Jana, prosil také je o almužnu. Petr spolu s Janem na něj upřeli zrak a řekli: ,Pohleď na nás!‘ Obrátil se k nim a čekal, že od nich něco dostane. Petr však řekl: ,Stříbro ani zlato nemám, ale co mám, to ti dám: ve jménu Ježíše Krista Nazaretského vstaň a choď!‘ (Sk 3,1–6) Chromí tohoto světa stále přicházejí k Tělu Kristovu a pohlížejí na nás s očekáváním tak, jako onen muž sedící u chrámové brány hleděl na Petra a Jana, a očekávají, že od nás něco dostanou. Co jim církev mnoha a různými způsoby říká? „Stříbra a zlata máme spousty. Přijď a připoj se k naší farnosti. Máme úvěrové sdružení, velmi demokratické. Máme pastorační radu. Máme i kytarovou mši. Jsme velmi pokrokoví, v kostele vyvěšujeme transparenty. Jdeme s dobou a vyjdeme vstříc každé tvé potřebě. A taky máme společenství svatého Vincence z Pauly.“ Ale nikdo nemá odvahu říct: „Smím si s tebou promluvit o Ježíši? Dovol, abych se s tebou pomodlil. Pán tě bude učit významu odpuštění. Pán tě bude učit, k čemu je církev a Písmo. Pojď a následuj Ježíše!“ To se za Ježíše stydíme? Sdílíme se s ním? Mluvit o Ježíši považujeme za naivní, staromódní, pobožné a trochu protestantské. Máme církev. Máme svátosti, máme kněze a biskupy! Nicméně je to jen Ježíš, kdo zachraňuje. Apoštolové mluví s neohrožeností a nadšením. Ježíš to dokázal! Ve jménu Ježíšově je mi dávána veškerá síla. Kdykoli se vracejí, hlásají jméno Ježíše Krista. Co se to s církví stalo, že je tolik těch, kteří už nejsou hrdi na jméno Ježíšovo?

Jesus Saves Once, when Peter and John were going up to the Temple for the prayers at the ninth hour, it happened that there was a man being carried past. He was a cripple from birth; and they used to put him down every day near the Temple entrance called the BeautifuI Gate so that he could beg from the people going in. When this man saw Peter and John on their way into the Temple he begged from them. Both Peter and John looked straight at him and said, “Look at us.” He turned to them expectantly, hoping to get something from them, but Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold, but I will give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!” (Acts 3:1-6, JB) The lame of the world still come to the Body of Christ and look at us expectantly, as they looked at Peter and John, hoping to get something from us. What does the Church say to them in many and varied forms? “Silver and gold we have plenty of. Come, join our parish. We have a credit union, very democratic. We have a pastoral council. We have a guitar Mass. We’re very avant-garde, hanging banners in our church. We’re up to date and will meet your every need. We have a St. Vincent de Paul society.” But no one has the courage to say: “May I talk to you about Jesus'? Let me pray with you. The Lord will teach you the meaning of forgiveness. The Lord will teach you the meaning of Church, of the Scriptures. Come, follow Jesus!” Are we ashamed of Jesus? Do we share him'? It feels naive, old-fashioned, pious, and a bit Protestant, to talk about Jesus. We have Church. We have sacraments, we have priests and bishops! Yet Jesus alone saves. The apostles speak with boldness and with fire. Jesus did it! In the name of Jesus all power is given to me! Every time they return they proclaim the name of Jesus Christ.
