Nenávist k sobě Když jsem na začátku sedmdesátých let začínal pracovat s mladými lidmi, strávil jsem hodně času tím, že jsem je přesvědčoval, že jsou dobří. Zdálo se, jako by všichni sami sebe chovali v nekonečné, bezmezné nenávisti. Později, když jsem pracoval s komunitou „Nový Jeruzalém“, zjistil jsem, že se to týká nejen mládeže, ale i dospělých. Bezmezně se nenávidí, pochybují o sobě a musí vynakládat většinu své energie, aby o sobě smýšleli dobře. Jsem přesvědčen, že pocit viny nebo negativní obraz sebe sama, nebo jak už tomu chcete říkat, namnoze nastává proto, že jsme svému křesťanskému lidu dovolili, aby přijal chybný program. Křesťané se dnes cítí doma ve světě, o kterém nám Ježíš říkal, abychom v něm nikdy nezdomácněli. A co je horší, jsou doma ve světě, kde dívky trpí anorexií, chlapci myslí, že musí vynikat ve fotbale a všichni ostatní se srovnávají s bohatými, slavnými, s těmi, kdo udávají módu. Soutěž, konkurence je prostě naším jménem pro nadvládu. Když vytvoříte společnost, která se musí definovat na základě moci a úspěchu, nutně tam musí existovat také bezmocní a neúspěšní. A ti tvoří v naší společnosti většinu. Lidé v naší společnosti jsou předurčeni prohrávat.

Self-hatred When I started working with young people in the early 70’s I spent a lot of time trying to convince teenagers that they were good. They all seemed endlessly, bottomlessly to hate themselves. Later, I was working with the New Jerusalem Community and I found it wasn’t just teenagers but adults, too. They endlessly hate themselves, doubt themselves and have to spend most of their energy to feel good about themselves. I’m convinced that much guilt, or negative self-image, or whatever we want to call it, happens because we have allowed our Christian people to accept the wrong agenda. Christians today feel at home in a world that Jesus told us never to be at home in. Even worse, they’re at home in a world in which girls become anorexic, boys think they must be on the starting football lineup, and all the rest compare themselves to the rich, the well-known, the image makers. Competition is simply our name for domination. Whenever you create a society that has to define itself by power and su'ccess, there will have to be those who are the powerless and the non-successful. And that’s the vast majority of the people in our society. People in our society are set up to lose. from Preparing for Christmas With Richard Rohr
