Milovat církev Nic ve světě není účelem samo o sobě – včetně církve, kněží, biskupů, papežů, Bible – nic! Jen v Bohu je vše završeno; všechno ostatní je jen prostředkem. Spasit nás může jen Bůh, nikoli církev. Říkám to ovšem s vědomím své velké lásky k církvi. Bůh zachraňuje, zatímco církev je nádherným darem od Boha, je dána, aby kázala slovo, které nás osvobodí. Jestliže ale kážeme „církev“ a vyvyšujeme „církev“, neznamená to nutně, že hlásáme Pána. Často kážeme sami sebe. Ježíš nikdy nekázal Izrael, kázal Hospodina Jahve. Kázal absolutní transcendenci Jahve a poslušnost vůči němu. Ježíš ale současně Izrael nesráží. Miloval Izrael. Pokud byl Izrael věrný Smlouvě a prorokům, byl Ježíš Izraele poslušen, byl poslušen kněží, poslušen „církve“. Ale nezdráhal se stále tlouct na dveře. Vytrvale Izrael vyzýval, aby byl věrný sám sobě. Ježíš nás učil milovat věci nemilé, právě takové, jaké jsou. Jestliže milujeme jenom to, co za to stojí, nikdy milovat nebudeme. Pán miloval „církev,“ Izrael, právě takové, jaké jsou. Nemůžeme milovat církev takovou, jaká byla před padesáti roky. To není nic jiného než útěk před dneškem. Tou jedinou církví, kterou máme milovat, je ta dnešní.

Loving the Church Nothing in this world is an end in itself, including Church, priests, bishops, popes, laws, Bible – nothing! Only God is an end; everything else is a means. Only God can save us, not the Church. I say that out of a great love for the Church. God saves, and the Church is that beautiful gift given by God to preach that word which will set us free. But when we preach “Church” and raise up “Church,” we are not necessarily proclaiming the Lord. We often are preaching ourselves. Jesus never preached Israel, he preached Yahweh. He preached the absolute transcendence of Yahweh and fidelity and obedience to Yahweh. At the same time Jesus never put Israel down. He loved Israel. Insofar as Israel was true to the covenant and true to the prophets, Jesus was obedient to Israel, obedient to the priests, obedient to “the Church.” But he wasn’t afraid to keep knocking on the door. He kept inviting Israel to be true to itself. Jesus taught us to love the unlovely, exactly as it is. If we simply love that which is worthy of love, we will never love at all. The Lord loved “the Church,” Israel, exactly as it was. You cannot love the Church as it was fifty years ago. That’s a cop-out.
