Autorita Matky Terezy Ježíš je zavolal k sobě a řekl jim: „Víte, že ti, kdo platí u národů za první, nad nimi panují, a kdo jsou u nich velcí, utlačují je. Ne tak bude mezi vámi; ale kdo se mezi vámi chce stát velkým, buď vaším služebníkem; a kdo chce být mezi vámi první, buď otrokem všech. Vždyť ani Syn člověka nepřišel, aby si dal sloužit, ale aby sloužil a dal svůj život jako výkupné za mnohé.“ (Mk 10,42–45) Jak to přijde, že Matka Tereza dokáže před tisícihlavým davem po většinu času jednoduše opakovat věty Nového zákona? Je nekomplikovaná. A přece lidé napjatě sedí na kraji židle a naslouchají jí. Neříká nic nového: „Ježíš vás miluje,“ ubezpečuje nás. „Jsme syny a dcerami Božími a musíme milovat Ježíšovy chudé.“ Nicméně lidé odcházejí obnoveni, proměněni a obráceni. Ona není kněz. Není zvláště vzdělaná. Její autorita vychází z jejího životního stylu. Svůj život odevzdala a na něm stojí. Pravda v ní je jako magnet. Je v tom síla, kterou mají světci. Proto Pavel učí, že církev je vystavěna na autoritě apoštolů a proroků, evangelistů, těch, kdo léčí, učí, milují a pomáhají a všichni společně tvoří jednotu v díle služby. Pravou základnou autority v církvi je duch služby – daleko více než titul nebo svěcení.

Mother Teresa’s Authority Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45, NAB) Why is it that Mother Teresa can stand up before crowds of thousands and simply repeat for the most part simple New Testament phrases? She’s not complicated. Yet people sit on the edge of their chairs listening to her. She doesn’t say anything new: “Jesus loves you,” she assures you. “We’re sons and daughters of God and we have to love Jesus’ poor.” Yet people walk out renewed, transformed and converted. She’s not a priest. She’s not well educated. Her authority comes from her life-style. Her life has been given over and she stands on her life. There’s a truth in her like a magnet. That’s the power the saints have. And that’s why Paul would teach that the Church is built on the authority of the apostles and the prophets, the evangelists and healers, the teachers, lovers and helpers, all together making unity in the work of service.
