Interesting new electrical problem

I've noticed on the KZ750, the low fuel light will come on even though its disconnected from the fuel tank, No its not low on fuel. I don't believe the plug is shorting out on the carburetor, but that will be the first place I check.

 

Here's the scenario, I'll be riding and the light will come on and the bike will lose power and backfire. Once the light goes out the bike runs as expected, excellent. This is obviously a short somewhere, since its intermittent its a little harder to find. So what am I looking for?

I was going to start with the the fuel indicator wire run and see if I could find any "shiners". I don't want to deconstruct the wiring harness as I'll just cause more issues.

Troubleshooting advice is much appreciated.
