So I took the title from my recently acquired 2010 KTM 530 XC-W to the DMV today.  Paid my $25 fee to the Illinois Department of Revenue (I thought this went up ?  Will I get another bill in the mail ?).  I then got the title transferred, and a nice new plate.  The only question the clerk asked was “Does that have one or two axles ?  I said “two”, he said “Well a car has two, one on each side, so a motorcycle must have one”.  I said “You are the boss, whatever you want to put into the computer”.

So now I have plates for my dirt bike, but am I legal ?   I have no horn, turn signals, mirrors, etc.  I just have a headlight and a tail/brake light.  What do I need to be legal and avoid getting a ticket ?

I assume I at least need a mirror and a horn, cuz’ that is all I have on my vintage bikes (along with head and tail lights).  Do need turn signals ?

from what I recall when i looked last time, all you need is a headlight, tale light, brake light and a mirror.
I think you're good to go.

also, lets go dirt biking as soon as this stupid snow melts a little.

I know on my R25 I dont have signals, and I think if you use the proper hand gestures, you are ok.  At least one mirror and a horn.

Nice, I need to transfer the title on my CRF450 and want to get plates for it.

I was worried I wouldn't be able to get them.

Illinois doesn't do dual sport conversions from dirt bikes anymore, unless you get it titled in another state and then reregister it here. So, if your title says off-road, you may want to drive over to Mich. to plate it.

AMA has the requirements here: http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/State-Laws.aspx?stateid=13

Thanks for the replies. I guess the key is the title not flagged as "off-road".

I found this here https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_x140.pdf

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
No motorcycle or motor-driven cycle may be legally operated on a street or highway
without the following required equipment:

Brakes — Motorcycles must have brakes on both wheels, with a separate means
of application for each wheel or two separate means of application on the rear
wheel. Motor-driven cycles must have either a hand-operated or foot-operated
brake on at least one wheel, preferably the rear wheel.

Headlights — At least one white light, visible for 500 feet, must be lighted whenever
the motorcycle is being operated on streets or highways. A device to modulate
the high beam of the head lamp may be used except when lighted lamps are
required for all vehicles.

Horn — Must be heard for 200 feet.

License plate light — One white license plate light must be lighted whenever the
headlight is on and must make the license plate visible at least 50 feet away.

Muffler — Must be in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any
excessive or unusual noise. Modification of an exhaust system for the purpose of
increasing the noise level is prohibited by law.

Rearview mirror — Must reflect a view of at least 200 feet.

Stoplight — One red light, actuated by the brake and visible for 500 feet.

Taillight — One red light, visible for 500 feet.

If you want a street plate on your dirt bike you can get REALLY lucky like dan OR you install the requirements (headlight, horn, taillight, etc) and then you need have it inspected.  In 2010, I got my KTM street legal by having it inspected by Inspector Gerdes of the ISP, Vehicle inspection unit.  You can call him at 217-557-2084 to set up an appointment.  Then truck the bike down to springfield.  Ugg.

Good luck!
