I don't want to sound like I'm dissing you but have you considered going with a different carb? I'm assuming the bike is a 2 stroke dirt bike, likely a Motocross bike as those were overwhelming the most Maico's sold in the U.S. in that time frame (or an enduro that at that time from Maico was basically an MX bike with lights)...Wrap that Bing up and put it on the shelf and save it for the next owner of the bike and get a Mikuni. Most of the places that sell Mikuni carbs can even have it "ballpark" jetted for you so all you will need to do is fine tune it. Believe me, most racers of that time who raced Euro bikes would shelve their Bings, IRZ's, Amal's and others and replace it with a Mikuni. The vast availability of parts and the ease of tuning them with great results for even a rank beginner make them the best carb of choice for almost any application. Keihin's and Del'Orto run a distant second to Mikunis and they don't even come close in availability and tuning info.
That said...an overflowing carb is an indication that the float is not raising up enough to put pressure on the float needle valve to cut off the flow of gas once the float bowl is full. Either your float level is off or the float is not "floating" or the float needle valve is not functioning due to wear.
 Good Luck,

Any experts on a Bing Type 54-2 carb out there?  My '79 Maico is finally back together after a 4 year restoration.  I got it running, but can't get the carb to stop overflowing.
The carb's been boiled clean and rebuilt and I've spent hours messing with the float height.  Any help would be appreciated.  I'm anxious to get it back on the track.
Thanks
Joe

Thanks for the feedback.  Yes, I've been through the Bing vs Mikuni debate. I've talked to Maico people and Maico people wanna bes  The true Maico experts from back in the day say the Bing makes more power once you figure out its intricacies. By 79 many of the issues historically associated with Bings were supposedly fixed.  I may end up with a Mikuni, but would like to figure out the Bing as it just seems cooler.  The float, pin and float needle are all new and adjusted per specs.  Obviously something is still not right as I've tried raising and lowering the float by various increments.  Worse case I'll call one of the guys I know on the west coast, but was hoping to find someone locally that can walk me through this thing in person.
Thanks
Joe

Amals are much better carbs than DelOrto’s.

Keihins are souless.

Cable pull Bings are just commie Amals.

You meet the nicest quitters on a Mukuni.

I hate wrap.  Why is my Laverda broken?

The Type 54 Bing is a solid carburetor, it is a close sister to the Bing 53. I run a pair of 53’s on my BMW R50/5 AHRMA race bike, and I also run one on my BMW R25/3 Modified land speed bike.  These were standard fitting on the BMW R50 & R60 for nearly a decade. I have more than a few spares that I have either picked up for dirt cheap, or fellow ChiVin’ers have given me for free.  They rebuild nice, and are simple to dial in.

The Type 54 runs ultra-light aircrafts.

I assume you have visited http://www.bingcarburetor.com/  ?

Here is your carb:  http://www.bingcarburetor.com/pdf/54x2.pdf

In my experience, it is either the float needle or a bad float.

Try this.  Turn off the gas and remove the float bowl.  Raise the float up with your finger.  Turn on the petcock, and move the float up and down to see if the float needle is doing the job of shutting off the fuel.  It could be a damaged float needle seat.

I have plenty of spare Bing parts if you want to swap out pieces to see what is causing the issue…

Do not succumb to the temptation of the Mikuni Dark Side…

Actually Amals are much better carbs than they are given credit for. Both Monoblocs and concentrics...They're as easy to tune as a Mikuni and if they're well cared for they're every bit as good as Mikunis. But they wear their bores out of round and all you have to do is tighten the flange too tight one time and you're leaking air...just a few things that cause Amals to have a bad rep when if the person fettling them would just heed some of the old sages advice and learn Lund machines toll free number!

Quit complaining about your Laverda being broken...just sell it to "The Seat Guy" and use the money to buy one that isn't broken!

Thanks for the comments.  Yes, I've already tried the above, I bought my rebuild pats from Bing USA, I've been to the ultra light aircraft sites.  The thing bench tests fine, I can move the float up and down and it shuts off the fuel.  It doesn't start overflowing until I begin kicking over the motor.  After a few kicks it begins overflowing. I got the bike started the other day, It ran fine for a few minutes then quit as the carb started overflowing.  I've got the float set per the settings recommended by the bing manual and a Maico service bulletin from early '79.  What I'm finding with this entire restore is that there are many nuances with these Maicos and the one you have is likely a bit different than the one that came out of the factory a few months earlier.
Thanks
Joe
