My 2007 BMW R1150R won't start:
1) The starter motor is not engaging--
2) The L dash ABS general warning light is on--
3) The R dash ABS warning/brake failure light is flashing at the rate of about one blink per second (Hz seems to be important according to the rider's manual but I don't know the difference betw 1 Hz and 4 Hz)--
4) There is a lot of noise coming from the R side of the engine like a switch trying to power something on repeatedly but nothing is happening.
5) The battery is juiced according to the battery charger box.

Anything I can do for this at home, or is it time to call a tow truck?
I went to some online BMW owners sites but I was having to weed through literally 1000s of posts and am hoping CVinners might help jump start the diagnosis.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm supposed to leave for Colorado a week from this Monday.
Thanks!

TigerLady

I don't know anything specific about BMWs, but if the noise you describe when trying to start sound like a rapid clicking it seems like a starter solenoid not getting enough power from a flat battery.

1 blink per second is 1Hz.  4Hz would definitely be noticably faster than what you describe.

My quick googling found this forum post where a weak battery caused a blinking ABS
Light.

2nd on Max's assessment. Do you have a jump pack? The starter motor is on the left side of the bike by the transmission and there's a plus 12 lug there that's easier to get to than the battery under the tank. The whirring sound on the right is the fuel pump from the sound of things, and the abs unit will fault if battery voltage is too low. The charger will indicate full charge on good and bad batteries alike, so that's not much of a test.

When in doubt, Replace the battery.   Make sure it is a good get battery.

That is supposed to read GEL battery.   I had an R1100GS and the blinking ABS is the tell tail sign.   Even if the bike is still starting.

Thanks to everyone who posted me back on this problem.

I removed the battery from the bike yesterday—big project, but satisfying getting to know my bike on a more intimate level—and Mr. TigerLady volunteered to pick up a new one from National today, gel only.

Hopefully I’ll be at Blue Moon THIS Sunday!
