India are copyrighted.
I think Lohit Hindi is GPLed and looks well.

is not known. And if the intention is good (read non-commercial)
methinks one can always use it. Mangal is (probably) a property of

If you are looking for serious unicode compatibility,
then I would recommend "Arial Unicode MS". Its a bit
heavy font(abt 22MB) but I've not seen any better
unicode font than this, since it supports a lot of
char sets & hindi looks more pretty in it than in
mangal!! :)

characters jumps several characters away (in certain Linux
distributions, and in certain applications). However, a nice, free (GPL)
and still under much development, Hindi font Gargi (download -
http://www.indictrans.org/Fonts_files/English/f2.php#freefont ), (I
recommend) can be used as an alternate to proprietary Mangal . Lohit is
another good alternate, released by Redhat India under GPL, and is also
under active development cycle.

इनमे से कम से कम एक तो केवल

क्या जूमला जीपीऍल के तहत वितरित है? तो फिर आप मङ्गल का इस्तेमाल नहीं
कर सकते, यानी आप मङ्गल को जूमला के साथ वितरत नहीं कर सकते हैं। जीपीऍल

:) What's wrong with this approach -
1. I download a proprietary font.
2. remove all of the traces of its name from the file (using a font editor).
3. modify the shape of the "anuswaar bindu" little bit - just to prove a point (pun accidental).
4 rename the file something like eswami.ttf - NOW does it not becomes my font?
5. If I distribute this creation of mine - eswami.ttf under GPL - won't it become our font??
Simple no?
What did we learn from Bhappy lahiri and Annu malik? We should use copy and rename commands more often than we do! ;-)

पहले ये समझते हैं कि किसी भी तन्त्रांश को जीपीऍल के तहत वितरित करने के
मायने क्या हैं। इसके मायने यह हैं कि यह तन्त्रांश
1) दुबारा कभी जीपीऍल के अलावा किसी और शर्त के तहत वितरित नहीं किया जा सकता है,
2) कोई भी पुनः वितरित कर सकता है, जीपीऍल के तहत।
केवल हिन्दुस्तान में ही नहीं, पूरी दुनिया में।
मान लें कि कोई व्यवसायी इण्डिकजूमला का प्रतिद्वन्द्वी तन्त्रांश बनाता
है - जो जीपीऍल में नहीं है। मान लें कि वह माइक्रोसॉफ़्ट ही है। और
उन्हें भनक लगती है कि उनका माल चोरी किया गया है। तो इण्डिक जूमला की
वाट लग गई। इसलिए कि हिन्दुस्तान के बाहर सर्वाधिकार नियमों का पालन
ज़्यादा कठोर तरीके से होता है। और इसका हर्ज़ाना इण्डिक जूमला के
वितरकों को देना होगा।
इसके कई उदाहरण मुक्त तन्त्रांश सङ्गठनों के सामने हैं। स्को और लिनक्स
वाला सबसे ताज़ा है।
इसके अलावा एटीऍण्ड टी और फ़्रीबीऍसडी वालो के बीच तो इस चक्कर में इतने
झगड़े हुए हैं कि फ़्रीबीऍसडी वालो की कमर टूट गई है। अन्ततः कुछ लोगो ने
फ़्रीबीऍसडी का कर्नल बिल्कुल ताज़े तरीके से लिखा। इसमें समय गया। अब
इसके प्रयोक्ता भी बहुत कम हैं।
अन्ततः, जैसे आपने कहा, बात पकड़े जाने की ही है। लेकिन पकड़े जाने पर जो
अञ्जाम होता है - उत्पाद का और कारीगरों का - वह बहुत भयावाह है। ऊपर से
अन्तर्जाल पर 90% काम राम भरोसे होता है - तू भी कर रहा है, मैं भी कर
रहा हूँ, सो दोनो भले। लेकिन एक बार बदनामी होने के बाद अछूतो से भी बदतर
व्यवहार होगा।
आप क्या समझते हैं, फ़ॉण्ट बनाने वालों को पता नहीं चलेगा कि नकल की गई
है? उन लोगो ने पूरी ज़िन्दगी इसीमें गुज़ार दी है - ज़रूर खुद भी कई बार
नकल की होगी।
जीपीऍल के तहत मौजूद फॉण्ट कई लिनक्स वितरणों में जाते हैं। एक बार लोगो
को शक होने लगा कि इस इलाके के फॉण्ट चोरे की हैं तो कोई अपने वितरण में
हिन्दी के फॉण्ट ही शामिल नहीं करेगा।
इसके अलावा, मुझे नहीं लगता कि मङ्गल को टीपने की ज़रूरत है। गार्गी खुद
बहुत अच्छा फॉण्ट है। शायद मङ्गल से बेहतर। सो इन सब चक्करों में पड़ने
का क्या प्रयोजन है?
मेरा अनुभव है कि अपनी कृतियों और दूसरों की कृतियों के प्रयोग की शर्तों
के बारे में हिन्दी जाल जगत में बहुत कम परवाह है। इसके फ़ायदे कम और
नुकसान अधिक होंगे। हममे से अधिकतर लोग अपने खाली समय में कुछ रचनात्मक
करने के लिए समय देते हैं। तो इस चक्कर में नुकसान क्यों झेला जाए और
क्यों उठाया जाए।
जाल पर चोरी पकड़ी ही जाती है - इसके कई उदाहरण मैं इण्डलिनक्स पर देख
चुका हूँ, और फॉण्टों के लाइसेंसो पर भी - कई फॉण्ट लोगो ने शुरू में
जीपीऍल के तहत वितरित किए, और उसके बाद पता चला कि वह वास्तव में उनके
मालिक थे ही नहीं। सो विकास कार्य वहीं रुक गया। मेरा सुझाव है कि इस
प्रकार के पचड़ों में पड़ के मुक्त तन्त्रांश समुदाय के लिए और समस्याएँ
पैदा करना उचित नहीं है। जाल के हाथ लम्बे हैं और गूगल सब देखता है -
हमारे मिटा देने के बाद भी।
