vye...@gmail.comHello fellow immigrant-justice organizers!
To jump start their Fair Food Campaign's Supermarket Week of Action (Oct. 16 - 24), the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and Student/Farmworker Alliance have asked us if we would hold a picket outside of the new Publix opening in Ocala this Thursday morning, October 13. That same day in Tampa, Tampa Bay Fair Food activists will also protest a new store opening in their area. Holding a picket at the precise moment of the ribbon-cutting very effectively gets under the skin of Publix because they have done media work to help create a positive, beautiful Public Relations moment -- and there we are, messing it up for Publix and seizing their media moment to draw attention to the CIW's Fair Food Campaign.
I know this is SUPER early in the morning, but if you can come it will be fun and powerful. The good part about the early time is we will be back in Gainesville by 10:00 AM, so you can eat breakfast (haha!) and continue on with your day as normal from there.
We have a photographer (Scott Robertson, woo, woo!) coming, so the CIW will be able to post the picket on their website:
www.ciw-online.org
IF ANY ONE HAS A BULL HORN OR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, those would be fun and helpful.
Please forward this on to your friends whom you think would be interested. Logistical details, directions, meeting place, and schedule follow below. Fliers with basic info are also attached; please print & pass out to any group meetings you go to. Please contact me if you have questions or further ideas.
Thank you for reading & considering, and hope to see you on Thursday morning.
TUESDAY (tomorrow), 7:00 PM -- SIGN, BANNER, & T-SHIRT MAKING PARTY:
at Emmanuel Mennonite Church (1236 NW 18th Avenue)
If you have any of the following art materials, please bring them as we will be making art to use at our Thursday protest:
-Posterboard (for signs)
-Old white sheets (for banners - we can call out CEO Ed Crenshaw & also link our picket to the one in Tampa; perhaps "Mr. Crenshaw: From Ocala to Tampa, Disappointed Publix Customers Demand Fair Tomatoes")
-Plain T-shirt (we might make T-shirts that say "Disappointed Publix Customer")
-Markers
-Paint
-Other art supplies
THURSDAY (Oct. 13), 5:30 - 10:00 AM -- PUBLIX PICKET IN OCALA:
5:30 AM - DEPART FROM GAINESVILLE
-Carpools meet at & leave from Emmanuel Mennonite Church (1236 NW 18th Ave)
6:45 AM - ARRIVE AT NEW PUBLIX STORE, PARK, & ASSEMBLE PICKET LINE
-Park View Commons (Store #1289) // 3035 SE Maricamp Road // Ocala, FL 34471
7:00 AM - Ribbon Cutting & Media Moment
-Have press packets ready to hand to curious media people; include CIW's response to Publix's "Put-it-in-the-price" defense.
8:00 AM - Grand Opening & Customer-Interaction Opportunty
-Hand out our business cards for CEO Ed Crenshaw
-We should also have a simple flier prepared to give curious customers;
-Perhaps we could also have a bucket full of pennies with a "Pennies for Publix" sign, hand customers a penny, and ask them to give it to the manager on behalf of Fair Food Code of Conduct with CIW?
8:30 AM - PACK UP & DEPART FOR GAINESVILLE
10:00 AM - ARRIVE BACK IN GAINESVILLE
-Carpools return to and disperse from Emmanuel Mennonite Church (1236 NW 18th Ave)
